We are unable to provide a change of clothes/socks if kids get wet from playing in the snow without the proper gear.

Did you know November is Diabetes Awareness Month? Dear McKelvie Families~

Yesterday's Move-A-Thon was a big hit with the kids! They had a blast playing dodgeball, capture the flag, and "moving" at all of of the other fun activities. WITCH WAY FUN RUN EVENT UPDATE EMAIL
It looks like the Wicked Witch of the West is playing a cruel trick on us with the weather for the Lurgio Witch Way Fun Run on Saturday, October 27th. Instead of a tornado, we are getting a Nor'easter. In keeping with our theme of more FUN, we have decided to move our fundraiser indoors, which means we have been able to add more games and activities for the whole family to enjoy.

While we won’t be able to trick or trot down County Road, we will be taking our bibbed participants through the school to visit our Halloween-themed pit stops on a journey that culminates in the gymnasium and dining hall with the fun activities of our Witch Way Family Fun Fest. In addition to the costume contest and raffles prizes, we will also have Halloween-themed crafts, inflatable bounce houses, face painting, pumpkin decorating, and so much more!

Schedule of Events:

9:30-10:30 Registration and bib/t-shirt pickup (Media Center)

9:30-11:00 Halloween-themed Pit Stops Open (Lurgio Hallways)

9:30-12:00 Food, Crafts, Activities and Games (Dining Hall and Gym)

10:45 Raffle winners drawn - winners posted and prize pickup (Lurgio Gym)

11:00 Costume Contest winners announced (Lurgio Gym)

11:00-12:00 Food, Crafts, Activities and Games in (Dining Hall and Gym)

We want to thank all our sponsors, participants, and volunteers for their flexibility as we adjust for the unpredictable weather this weekend. We look forward to a great community turnout tomorrow for our annual fundraiser!

Principal Notes 10.19.18

Dear McKelvie Families~

The weather has certainly changed over the course of this week!  Please make sure your child dresses for the cooler weather.  I strongly recommend labeling your child's belongings such as jackets, gloves, lunch boxes, etc,.  Our lost and found has tripled in size, so if your child is missing something, encourage them to look for it in the cafe.  Parents can look as well.

The Move-A-Thon is Thursday, October 25th. Fingers crossed for a sunny day!
Next Week is Spirit Week at McKelvie. The schedule is as follows:

Monday - Sports Theme Day: Get in the spirit of moving by wearing your favorite team's colors/jersey.

Tuesday - Wear RED Day: In recognition and celebration of “National Red Ribbon Week” wear RED on Tuesday.

Wednesday - McKelvie Colors Day: We are raising spirit and money for McKelvie, wear BLUE and GOLD if you have McKelvie Pride!

Thursday - Move-A-Thon Day - Wear your NEON YELLOW shirts and get ready to MOVE!

Friday - Rest and Recover: You have all worked hard, wear your comfiest sweats or rock your coolest pajamas.

Move-A-Thon Equipment
The Move-A-Thon is Thursday, October 25th. All students should plan to wear sneakers and comfortable clothes - with their Move-A-Thon shirts - on the day of the Move-A-Thon.

If your child will be using a scooter, ripstick, or skateboard they need to bring in their equipment plus a helmet. If your child will be rollerblading, in addition to their helmet, knee, elbow, and wrist pads are required. A full list of equipment needed for the Move-A-Thon can be found HERE.

If a student is able to fit their Move a Thon equipment in a backpack and/or on their lap in the seat, then they will be allowed to bring it on the bus. However, for equipment that does not fit within this guideline, they will not be able to bring on the bus, this includes scooters and riptsticks.

Non McKelvie Sporting Events:
In speaking with community members as well as the Bedford Police Department, there has been an increasing number of McKelvie students going to High School football games.  Some are going with parents and others are being dropped off.  Please know that there is no staff supervision at these games.  As such, it is important that parents keep an eye on their kids, to ensure they are safely enjoying the game.

Red Ribbon Week:
Next week (October 23rd - 31st) McKelvie school is participating in National Red Ribbon Week. This year’s theme is: “Life Is Your Journey. Travel Drug Free.” At school, students will engage in activities that promote a drug free and healthy lifestyle - wearing RED on Tuesday, signing the Red Ribbon pledge, High Five Friday with help from the Bedford Police Department, and sporting red bracelets. At home, discuss this topic with your child(ren), and set clear rules about not using illegal drugs. Click HERE for information about how to safeguard and dispose of prescription drugs in your home.

Library News:
Wow! The weather has turned. This is a perfect time of year to snuggle up with a great read! The library is bustling with students checking out great reads and using our Destiny interface to create a collection/reading log! This will be a digital record of the books that they have read during this school year. Be sure to ask your student if he/she has a collection created yet.

A BIG thank you to Janine Muir and the VERY supportive PTG! The book fair Scholastic Dollars have been spent and two new modular standing desks as well as 40 print books and several packages of fun bookmarks were purchased! The modular standing desks are a hit! Almost ALL of the books have already been checked out to McKelvie students and the bookmarks are marking spots in great reads. THANK YOU PTG.

Have a wonderful weekend! ~Mrs. Cote

Donations will be accepted at McKelvie the week of November 5-9. Is your coat from last winter too small? Consider donating your gently used coat to Mckelvie so we can pass it on to children in need. Thank You!

Box Tops:
We have collected to date a total of 1,554 box tops which is $155.40 for McKelvie. We are 15.5% of the way to our goal. Ask your neighbors and friends for their box tops too. Every little bit helps. Holiday Cards for Troops: WE NEED BLANK CARDS!!
Holiday Cards for Our Troops -- Last year, McKelvie students and families joined thousands of other families in surrounding towns in a grass-roots effort to send a holiday greeting card to every deployed sailor aboard a U.S. aircraft carrier. McKelvie contributed about 700 cards to the over 17,000 cards that were collected.  This year, Holiday Cards 4 Our Military-NH Challenge seeks to send 5,000 cards to deployed members of each of the 5 military branches, and we know McKelvie can help meet that goal.  Between now and October 15, families are invited to dig out your leftover cards from last year, with or without envelopes, and send them to school.  During the week of October 15-19, our students will write greetings to deployed service members in these cards and in homemade cards with their homerooms. You may contact Mr. Robinson for more information: robinsong@sau25.net.

Library News:
Our Before-School Book Club has started!  Thank you to all who have decided to participate as we begin The Losers Club by Andrew Clements.

This week two “Golden Tickets” were found in McKelvie Library books! Click HERE and HERE to see the “Golden Tickets” and the prizes awarded.  Congrats to Rachel and Emmy.  Happy book shopping and reading!

This is a friendly reminder to protect library books from water and snacks.  Please encourage your child(ren) to transport his/her library book(s) to and from school using a plastic bag.  This does not need to be a fancy bag.  We have had several books damaged by liquids. Rain and water bottles are common themes. I appreciate your help with this very much!
Have a wonderful weekend! ~Mrs. Cote

9.21.18 Principal Notes

Dear McKelvie Families~

It has been a terrific week, here at McKelvie! The bear was spotted again on Nashua Rd., so as a precaution, we've added airhorns to the recess safety bag. According to Animal Control, the bear is looking for food and is very scared of noise. While it is highly unlikely the bear would come on the playground with the noise of kids, the airhorns offer an extra level of protection.

In other news, New Hampshire State Assessment System testing from the spring of 2018 is going home with students today. Click HERE for the letter that is included with the state assessments.

Below are additional updates and announcements:

Destination Imagination is an extra curriculur that relies on parent volunteers. There is no guarantee that your child will be placed on a team, but we work very hard to place every child who registers. For more info on this wonderful program offered by our district, please check out www.nh-di.org or contact our coordinator, Marie Russell at bedfordrocksdi@gmail.com.

9.14.18 Principal Notes

Dear McKelvie Families~

The weather and the building have finally cooled off! Walking around the school, it is evident that kids and staff are back in the swing of a new academic year.  Next week will be the real test, with kids being in school for the first full week!

There are several new items in this week's Principal's Note.

Bus Stop Announcement:
Please make sure your child is at the bus stop 10 minutes before the bus is expected to arrive, per the Transportation Handbook. We've had a few busses running late because they had to wait for students.

Intramurals begin next week:
6th grade floor hockey - Tuesdays - 7:20-8:20a.m. - GYM
Soccer - Tuesday - 3:30-4:30 - GYM
5th grade floor hockey - Wednesdays - 7:20-8:20a.m. - GYM
Yoga - Wednesdays - 3:30-4:30 - GYM

Save the Date for this year's Move-A-Thon!
The McKelvie Move-A-Thon is the school's main fundraiser which culminates in an all-school event on Thursday, October 25th. Please mark your calendars and plan to volunteer and join us for this year's Move-A-Thon. More details, including student registration and volunteer information will be coming out regarding the Move-A-Thon in the weeks ahead.

During the Move-A-Thon all students move for one hour in one of the offered activities. Prior to the day, students ask friends and families to sponsor them or make a donation based on their activity. This event is a lot of fun and helps our school to raise money for programs and resources for our students. We are fortunate to have the PTG partner with us each year as we would not be able to run this event without the support of many parent volunteers.

Community Action Team:
Community Action Team advisors, Michael Crowell and Jodi Parsons received recognition from the Marine Corps, Toys for Tots program on behalf of McKelvie Staff and Students. The Toys for Tots recognized McKelvie Intermediate School for their active involvement and donations to the Toys for Tots program of Southern New Hampshire. Through the generous donation of McKelvie families, organized by the school's Community Action Team, the school community has been able to donate thousands of toys to help make the holiday season brighter for families in need in our area. Thank you to our school families for your generosity.  Click  HERE for a Toys for Tots MIS picture!

Library News:
Congratulations to Tommy, a 6th grader at McKelvie, who found the 5th “Golden Ticket.” Click HERE to see Tommy, his “Golden Ticket” and reading prize!

The McKelvie Library continues to remain a busy place with students relaxing and reading. We have had hour-long library overviews to introduce and reacquaint the students with the physical layout, Destiny Discover (our search interface), policy and procedures, and the over 100 new books we have acquired! Ask your child if he/she has visited their school library! So far 18 classes have come through!

Susan Cavanaugh, our Technology Integration Teacher, and I just finished Chromebook Overview lessons for all students! Please make sure that you help your child be a great digital citizen when they are using their school Google account at home. Parents and students should have reviewed and returned the McKelvie Student Chromebook Contract agreement that was sent home. This document outlines all of the student expectations/safety guidelines for using their Chromebooks and school Google accounts. Please click HERE if you need to review this important document.

As part of the 1:1 Chromebook program, students were asked to bring in a pair of inexpensive headphones/earbuds to leave at school. We want to remind parents that there is an option for students to purchase a pair of inexpensive earbuds (similar in quality to what you would purchase on a plane) from the library for $1.

Have a restful weekend! Next week will be our first five day week of the school year! ~Mrs. Cote
