Dear McKelvie Families ~

We had four full days of school this week, so I think we are heading in the right direction!  As a reminder, we do have school on President’s Day, but are one week away from February break.  I recommend that your child check Power School to make sure they are up-to-date on their assignments.  It is always a great feeling to leave for break with nothing on their academic plate!  On to this week’s update:

Information

Faculty Basketball Game
My office has been queried several times in the last few weeks regarding the McKelvie Faculty Basketball game.  By POPULAR demand, we have scheduled our game for Thursday, May 11th @ 6pm BHS.  More information to come later.

Yankee Candle Update
NOTICE: Due to school cancellations and snow delays, the FINAL due date for Yankee Candle paper order forms will be MONDAY, FEBRUARY 20th. Yankee Candles make great gifts for any occasion and are made right here in New England. Online ordering is available through February 24th (group code #999965479). Online orders will be shipped directly to the purchaser and shipping is free on purchases over $100. The PTG receives 40% of all sales and that goes right back into our schools.
Due to the fragile nature of the products, any paper orders will need to be picked up at McKelvie in March (pick up date and times to be announced).

Celebration

Bedford Food PantryItems Needed for Children
Food Insecurity is a growing concern across the nation and right here in our own backyard.  Nearly 350 adults and children in Bedford qualify for food stamps and more than 167 families in Bedford meet the income standards for the government’s free school lunch program.
In light of these numbers, the Bedford Food Pantry has started a new program, School Lunch Plus, to provide students in Bedford who face food insecurity two lunches each weekend (with complete privacy/anonymity).  In order to provide two lunches for each student in need, the Food Pantry is looking for donations of these specific items.
If you are able to donate these items (these are ongoing donations), please bring them by the Bedford Food Pantry at the Bedford Presbyterian Church, 4 Church Road, Bedford, NH.
Parents/guardians, please contact the school guidance counselor or school nurse if you would like your child to participate in this program.

Dear McKelvie Families ~

Over the last year, I have noticed a consistent increase in the volume of information in my weekly notes.  As a way to better help manage their readability, I’m going to try incorporating three sections: information, celebration, & previous news.  My hope is that this will allow you to prioritize what is of most importance to you and your family.  Feedback is welcome.  Below is this week’s pilot:

Information

Last Day of School
As of today, the NEW last day of school will be Friday, June 16th.  For each snow day added, another day is added to the end of the school year.

Club Photos - UPDATED
A photographer will be here on the morning of Thursday, February 16th, to take club photos for the yearbook. If your child is a member of a club this year, please make every effort possible to have him/her present and on time so they won't miss the photo. We also will be taking individual photos of students who either missed the original/retake picture days or are new to the district since November 7th.

McKelvie Grandparents’ Day
Mark your calendars, we have moved Grandparent’s Day to Friday, May 19th as to not conflict with Peter Woodbury.  More information to come.  Questions  can be directed to Denise Roy (royd@sau25.net).

Box Tops for Education
It’s that time of year again - please turn in your box tops to McKelvie.  We have to get them in by February 17th. Questions can be directed to Stephanie Richard @ Spare111778@aol.com

Pennies for Patients
The Community Action Team (CAT) is kicking off their February Drive,  "Pennies for Patients."  We are collecting your loose change to benefit the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS).  CAT will be sending home containers for student coin collection or students can simply bag up their coins and drop them off in the container outside the Main Office.  Thank you for joining with CAT to help LLS find cures for blood cancers and to improve the quality of life for patients and their families.  We will be collecting for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society until Friday, 2/24.
Lurgio Players Present - Beauty and the Beast
Please join us as the Lurgio Players proudly present Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast” on Friday, February 10 at 7:00 p.m. and Saturday, February 11 at both 2:00 and 7:00 p.m. in the BHS Theater. Ticket prices are $7 for adults and $5 for students, and can be purchased at the door or online at http://www.seatyourself.biz/rosslurgio. We hope to see you there!

Celebration

A Special Thank You
We would like to send out a HUGE thank you to the Bedford PTG and the Bedford Men's Club for their incredible support!  Due to their contributions, we are able to bring author Gordon Korman to McKelvie on March 6 for daytime presentations and small group work with the students, and for an afternoon community event.  We are extremely grateful for these two groups for making this possible!  Our previous author visits have had a tremendous impact on the students, and we believe that this one will too!

National School Counseling Week
A BIG thank you to Jodi Parsons and Priscilla McGinty for their work in celebrating the services that are brought to students through School Counseling.  With two snow days and two delays, they have had to work extra hard.  Check out this CUTE picture of Ms. McGinty sharing her frustration with Clinical Psychologist, Dr. Carol Houde.

Service Dog Visits McKelvie Library
Today in the MIS Library we had a special visit from Ellen Smith's certified service dog, Major. It is our hope to have Major visit the library on Fridays during recess. This photo captures Ava Carpenter, Reegan Murpy, Sofia Di Stefano, and Madison Burnett speaking to Mrs. Smith about Major and all he does to help her and her family. Stay tuned as Major will be returning and listening to students read in the library!
