Dear McKelvie Families ~

I hope that this email finds you well and having had a wonderful Spring Break!  When the students return on Monday, we will be in the final stretch. As the warm weather arrives, we will all need to keep focus knowing that hard work will lead to summer vacation.  During this last month or so, let’s all stay positive and productive! Welcome Back!

Excel Testing
Attention:  The end-of-grade 5 Excel math placement assessment will take place on Friday, May 11, 2018.  If you would like your child to take this assessment, please download the permission slip.  Also, please check our McKelvie Math placement page for general information and Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ).

McKelvie Breakfast
We will begin offering a grab and go breakfast for students starting May 2nd.  Meals will be available for sale between 7:45am and 8:15am in the Cafe (Before School Program) and then at 8:40am when students enter the building.  Questions can be directed to Cyndi Parker at parkerc@sau25.net.  Click HERE for details.

Grandparents’ Day
McKelvie is hosting Grandparents’ Day on May 18th from 9:30am to noon.  Click HERE for all the information you need!

Bedford Historical Society Winners!
Congratulations  to the winners of  the Bedford Historical Society’s essay contest !  First place-Maggie Berleth, 2nd place - Haley Hall and 3rd place -  Talya Baskin. Also, great job to the honorable mention students who shared their essays at the awards ceremony April 17th. Giada Kennedy,  Jacqueline Fanburg, Lyla Stein & Brady Visaggio.

Earth Day Project
In honor of Earth Day, Heather Weilbrenner and Arianna Biondi (with the help of Mrs. Stephanie Leavenworth) used recyclable materials to create this colorful display of environmental awareness. Click HERE to see their work.

From the Library
April break is here! The library is looking for photos of where books went over break. I would love to have photographs of books with their readers to display in the library windows with the caption "Oh, The Places Our Books Go!" This can be as simple as snapping a photograph with a McKelvie reader and book in a comfy spot at home in Bedford to a McKelvie reader and book on a beach in the tropics. Email the picture with your child's name and the location to cotej@sau25.net. I will print and display all of the pictures I receive! Staff are invited to participate as well! Thank you in advance for participating. I can't wait to see where books travel over break. Enjoy the vacation!

SCHOOL SUPPLY KIT PROGRAM UPDATE - Due to unforeseen circumstances with our supplier, PTG will be unable to offer pre-purchased school supply kits to families for 2018/19 school year. Teachers will still provide supply lists that families can utilize to shop on their own for supplies before the start of the school year.
Please note that we will be working on finding an alternative and we hope to re-introduce this program next spring for 2019/20 school year supplies. Thank you for your understanding as we continue to work to find the best supplier to meet Bedford School District’s needs.
FISHER CATS DISCOUNTED TICKETS - Join the PTG for a fun family afternoon with the Fisher Cats on May 20th. Arrive early for the High Five Tunnel and stay late to run the bases.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR STAND BY ME - Lurgio Middle School is hosting the 29th year of Stand By Me on Friday, May 18th @ SNHU. This event, for all seventh grade students and their parents/guardians, is in need of volunteers to help the day run smoothly. Since 7th grade families are participating in the event we are looking for volunteers from other grades to help. DISTRICT YEAR IN REVIEW COMMUNITY MEETINGS - Join the Bedford PTG for two upcoming community meetings, first with Principals from all six of our schools on the Tuesday, 5/15 and then with Superintendent McGee on Wednesday, 5/30. Both meetings will be held at BCTV starting at 9:30AM.

Dear McKelvie Families ~

One more week until Spring Break.  If you have a chance, please stop by our Lost and Found to collect those winter coats, hats, gloves, and other miscellaneous items!  They will be donated during break.  Below are this week’s notes:

Morning Drop Off
Please reduce your speed when dropping off in the morning.  We have received several complaints that cars are driving too fast.  

School Play - Save the Date
Under the direction of Nate Sawyer and Musical Director Rebecca Coughlin, the McKelvie Drama Club will be performing Into the Woods, Jr.  Performances are May 4th @ 7pm and May 5th @ 1pm and 6pm.  Tickets will be $7 each.  Ticket sales will begin next week - more information to come.

NEW Intramural
GIRLS SOFTBALL:  Mondays, 3:30-4:30pm, starting Monday, April 30th, and running through Monday, June 11th. (Min participants:20 Max participants: 26 - Please note: if we do not have at least 20 girls, we will not be able to run this intramural.) Click HERE to register.

Grandparents’ Day
Save the Date!  May 18th is Grandparents’ Day at McKelvie.  This generally takes place from 9:30am until 11:30am.  More information to come.

Student Council Spirit Day
Student Council is hosting Freaky Friday on April 20th.  Students are encouraged to wear funny, non-matching clothes.  Dress code applies.  Questions can be directed to Student Council Advisors’ Mike Brown (brownm@sau25.net) or Carolyn Mail (mailc@sau25.net).

Book Fair Thank You
An ENORMOUS thank you to all of the volunteers who helped at this year’s Book Fair. Thanks to your support and their efforts, the PTG had $11,268.05 in gross sales!

Today we wrapped up the annual Great Stone Face Voting at McKelvie. Students had an opportunity to vote for their favorite Nominee out of 20 selected by children's librarians throughout the state! Students voted by Google Form. The McKelvie winner will be announced on Monday and the New Hampshire statewide winner will be announced in May. Stay tuned!

McKelvie’s DestiNation
Bedford DI Rocked at the Destination Imagination State Tournament
Bedford DI took home 9 of the top spots at the State Destination Imagination tournament in Bedford High School on
April 7th.  Teams had already presented at regional tournaments in Hampton, Swanzey and Goffstown to qualify for States. Teams presented solutions to challenges in many areas of STEM, as well as arts and community services projects.  Team SSSSAM won 1st place in the Project Outreach challenge for their
recycling efforts in the McKelvie cafeteria.  McKelvie Intermediate had an additional 3 teams who placed 2nd; The 5 Leaf Clovers, The Mindblowers, and Animal Brigade.  Teams are now organizing many fundraisers to help offset the cost of getting to the Global Finals in Knoxville, TN next month and appreciate 
your support. 

Destination Imagination - Shoes, Bags & Belt Drive Starts Monday
Bedford DI are having a special drive through Ecosmith Recyclers.  From now until May 25th, you can donate all your old shoes, bags and belts (any condition) in the marked boxes in our school lobby.  This items must be placed in a special blue bag.  This is a great way to get your spring cleaning under way, while helping raise funds for the teams heading to Global Finals in Knoxville, TN.  Reminder, clothing, fabrics, stuffed animals etc can always be donated in the bin in the parking lot.  We appreciate your support. Boys Flag Football

Hannaford Helps Schools
A HUGE thank you to everyone for saving your Hannaford dollars.  We received a check for $891.00!!  These funds will be used for student activities.  Many thanks!

Breakfast at McKelvie - NEW
Beginning March 30th, Food Services will be offering breakfast for McKelvie students.  The cost is $1.25 and will be available Monday through Friday. This is a pilot for our school to see how it is received.  Additional information is HERE.  Students can use their lunch accounts to purchase breakfast.

From the Library
Congrats to 6th grader Landon Larose from Mrs. Burke's homeroom! He was the 7th "Search Slip" winner for the month of March. Landon had his search slip filled out correctly and entered it into the monthly drawing when his class was looking for good reads! He won a $5.00 gift certificate to put towards a treat at a local ice cream establishment. Enjoy your treat, Landon!

On Thursday, Google was at McKelvie! What an amazing opportunity we were provided with. Our students and staff helped beta test the new Pioneer Augmented Reality (AR) app set to release next year.  Click HERE to see a short video about augmented reality. A Google Associate came and provided teachers with a 30 minute Augmented Reality training and then teachers were able to bring classes simultaneously to the library to lead their groups through 1-2 augmented reality lessons. Next week, we will be honoring National Library Week 2018 by voting for our favorite Great Stone Face Nominee. Students statewide, in grades 4-6, have an opportunity to vote. Students at McKelvie will have access to a Google Form voting ballot to cast their one vote. The form will be linked to the tab titled "Great Stone Face" off of the library website. The McKelvie winner will be announced during the week of April 16th. The statewide winner will be announced in May. Stay tuned!

Stand By Me presents Dr. Robin Bruck
A free presentation for Parents and Community Members
Stand By Me is proud to present Dr. Robin Bruck from the NH nonprofit group called Personal Responsibility Organization. Dr. Bruck will present techniques that will help:
  • Manage worry and stress
  • Decrease conflict
  • Increase teamwork and cooperation
  • Increase motivation
This free community presentation for parents and students will take place Monday, April 9 from 7-8 PM in the BHS Theater. Click here to learn more.

Destination Imagination State Tournament at BHS
Bedford DI is excited to welcome teams from across the state to the Destination Imagination State Tournament at Bedford High School this Saturday, April 7th.  Over 100 teams will bring their solutions to STEM challenges, including the arts and community service projects. Bedford DI has 10 teams who advanced including 4 teams from MIS -  Animal Brigade, The 5 Leaf Clovers, The Mindblowers and SSSSAM.  Everyone is welcome to come support the hometown teams.  Admission is FREE!
