1.26.18

Dear McKelvie Families ~

I want to let you know that our school has recently entered a partnership with St. Anselm’s College.  McKelvie is hosting approximately 26 students from their Teacher Preparation Program.  Your child may come home sharing that there are “college kids” helping out in the classroom.  These students are under the direct supervision of classroom teachers and are here to both learn and help.  I am excited about this partnership and hope that it yields positive results for us and them!  Below are this week’s notes:

Q2 Report Cards
Quarter 2 Report Cards are now available as a pdf through the Parent Portal.  If you are unable to access yours or require a paper copy, please contact your child’s teacher.

Tardy & Dismissal Letters
If your child has been tardy or dismissed in excess of 6 times during the quarter, the school generates a letter that is sent home.  This is simply a communication on our part to inform you as to the number of times these occurrences take place.

In the book, 11-year-old Jack's life gets turned upside down when his unpredictable mother leaves him on a camping trip and Jack must embark on a journey from Acadia National Park to find his way back home.  Here you will find a list of full text reviews if you'd like to take a look.

Since its inception 4 years ago, the R.E.A.D. project has sought to expose students to Reading for Enjoyment and Accepting Differences.  We look forward to another successful year in this endeavor!  During the R.E.A.D. project, all students will be divided into small groups of 10-12 students and will have the opportunity to have this book read to them by a McKelvie staff member for 30 minutes at the end of the school day.  The R.E.A.D. project runs from 2/5 through 2/12 with a kick-off assembly on 2/2.

From the Library
Last Friday, the Allen, Mail, Waldman Pod came to the library for a book character red carpet event. Mrs. Mail announced, with commentary, each character as they "strutted" the red carpet. This anticipated event was a success! Snacks and drinks were served. The costumed book characters introduced themselves, talked to the hosts, and asked questions after walking the red carpet. The hand shaking and verbal manners were impressive. Books that the students created book talks for were displayed on the library tables. Many students have come to the library to check out the books that their peers book talked. Click on Pic. 1, Pic. 2, Pic. 3 and Pic. 4 to see the transformed library and some of the costumed teachers and students! What a great event to encourage reading!

1.12.18

Dear McKelvie Families ~

I spent some time walking through classrooms this week.  I want you to know that I saw amazing things happening.  In particular, I sat in on a group of students doing “Book Talks.”  It was inspiring to watch your children present a book to their peers using key strategies (eye contact, voice projection, maintaining peer attention).  These same students received feedback and answered questions.  I was impressed with both the content they were sharing and the confidence they mustered to present.  I am proud of our students and our school!

NO SCHOOL
There is no school on Monday, January 15th in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
