Dear McKelvie Families~

It has been a very busy week here at McKelvie!  We are now officially fully staffed, as I am happy to announce that our new K-Z Guidance Counselor is officially on board!  Brian Miller comes to us with several years of guidance counseling experience, and has been a wonderful addition to McKlevie School.  Stop by guidance to say hello, if you happen to be in the building!

The following notes include important announcements and updates:

Tripod Student Surveys:
Starting on October 9, the district will administer the "Tripod Survey" to students in grades 2 - 12. The survey is academic and asks for the students' perspectives on our teaching practices. Box Top News:
Box Top Rewards: At this time, I would like to introduce Amy Gaff as the new McKelvie School Rewards Coordinator volunteer. She is the mom of a new 5th grader, Lukas. She has taken over this position from Stephanie Richard who has worked hard over the last four years collecting, counting, and submitting the school’s box tops. Last year the school received $513 out of our $1,000 goal.

Amy would like to let everybody know that it is super easy to cut these box tops off, put in a ziplock bag, and submit to the collection box in the school’s entry way.
- Every clipped box top is .10 cents for the school
- Box tops have an expiration date so please send them in often.
- Fall collection deadline is October 15th.
- Collect from neighbors and relatives. Every box top counts towards our goal.
- Download the Mobile App “Box Tops for Education”. Select McKelvie as your school. Select products you have purchased, scan receipt, and you are done. Funds will be sent to the school. It is that easy. You can also see how close the school is to their goal on this app.

Hannaford Helps School Initiative: Effective now through December 1st, the Hannaford store located at 4 Jenkins Road, Bedford is running its annual Hannaford Helps Schools program. Shop for the products with a specially marked tag, check out and get three school dollars for every four participating products purchased, and then deposit your school dollars in the collection tower in the store or but in the box top collection box and the Coordinator will make sure they get submitted. 9.21.18 Principal Notes

Dear McKelvie Families~

It has been a terrific week, here at McKelvie! The bear was spotted again on Nashua Rd., so as a precaution, we've added airhorns to the recess safety bag. According to Animal Control, the bear is looking for food and is very scared of noise. While it is highly unlikely the bear would come on the playground with the noise of kids, the airhorns offer an extra level of protection.

In other news, New Hampshire State Assessment System testing from the spring of 2018 is going home with students today. Click HERE for the letter that is included with the state assessments.

Below are additional updates and announcements:

9.14.18 Principal Notes

Dear McKelvie Families~

The weather and the building have finally cooled off! Walking around the school, it is evident that kids and staff are back in the swing of a new academic year.  Next week will be the real test, with kids being in school for the first full week!

There are several new items in this week's Principal's Note.

Bus Stop Announcement:
Please make sure your child is at the bus stop 10 minutes before the bus is expected to arrive, per the Transportation Handbook. We've had a few busses running late because they had to wait for students.

Intramurals begin next week:
6th grade floor hockey - Tuesdays - 7:20-8:20a.m. - GYM
Soccer - Tuesday - 3:30-4:30 - GYM
5th grade floor hockey - Wednesdays - 7:20-8:20a.m. - GYM
Yoga - Wednesdays - 3:30-4:30 - GYM

Save the Date for this year's Move-A-Thon!
The McKelvie Move-A-Thon is the school's main fundraiser which culminates in an all-school event on Thursday, October 25th. Please mark your calendars and plan to volunteer and join us for this year's Move-A-Thon. More details, including student registration and volunteer information will be coming out regarding the Move-A-Thon in the weeks ahead.

During the Move-A-Thon all students move for one hour in one of the offered activities. Prior to the day, students ask friends and families to sponsor them or make a donation based on their activity. This event is a lot of fun and helps our school to raise money for programs and resources for our students. We are fortunate to have the PTG partner with us each year as we would not be able to run this event without the support of many parent volunteers.

Community Action Team:
Community Action Team advisors, Michael Crowell and Jodi Parsons received recognition from the Marine Corps, Toys for Tots program on behalf of McKelvie Staff and Students. The Toys for Tots recognized McKelvie Intermediate School for their active involvement and donations to the Toys for Tots program of Southern New Hampshire. Through the generous donation of McKelvie families, organized by the school's Community Action Team, the school community has been able to donate thousands of toys to help make the holiday season brighter for families in need in our area. Thank you to our school families for your generosity.  Click  HERE for a Toys for Tots MIS picture!

Library News:
Congratulations to Tommy, a 6th grader at McKelvie, who found the 5th “Golden Ticket.” Click HERE to see Tommy, his “Golden Ticket” and reading prize!

The McKelvie Library continues to remain a busy place with students relaxing and reading. We have had hour-long library overviews to introduce and reacquaint the students with the physical layout, Destiny Discover (our search interface), policy and procedures, and the over 100 new books we have acquired! Ask your child if he/she has visited their school library! So far 18 classes have come through!

Susan Cavanaugh, our Technology Integration Teacher, and I just finished Chromebook Overview lessons for all students! Please make sure that you help your child be a great digital citizen when they are using their school Google account at home. Parents and students should have reviewed and returned the McKelvie Student Chromebook Contract agreement that was sent home. This document outlines all of the student expectations/safety guidelines for using their Chromebooks and school Google accounts. Please click HERE if you need to review this important document.

As part of the 1:1 Chromebook program, students were asked to bring in a pair of inexpensive headphones/earbuds to leave at school. We want to remind parents that there is an option for students to purchase a pair of inexpensive earbuds (similar in quality to what you would purchase on a plane) from the library for $1.

Have a restful weekend! Next week will be our first five day week of the school year! ~Mrs. Cote

9.7.18 Principal Notes

9.7.18

Dear McKelvie Families~

What a beautiful fall day to end an incredibly hot week! Our students have done a wonderful job of getting back into the swing of a new school year. They all looked terrific on picture day!

Just a reminder, there is no school next week on Tuesday, September 11th as it is election day.

There are several important updates related to McKelvie in the notes below.

Grade 6 Open House is Thursday, September 13th at 6:00.

Open House is for parents only. Traffic was horrendous for this week’s Grade 5 Open House due to detours and construction. I anticipate it will be challenging next week as well, so please plan for a little extra driving /parking time.

Clubs and Intramurals:
McKelvie Club and Intramural descriptions were posted to the McKelvie website on Wednesday, September 5th and online registration begins tonight, Friday, September 7th, at 5pm. Registration will remain open until the maximum number of students has been reached or September 14th, whichever comes first. When online registrations begin it is really important that parents do not submit more than one submission for each club/intramural as the online forms are set up to shut off when the maximum number of students has been reached.

Click HERE for Club registrations. You must click on the specific club you are interested in.

Important Info: Each club and intramural facilitator sets his/her own schedule and number of students, so please review the session info carefully. Note that Intramurals are posted each quarter, so only Q1 offerings will be published next week.

If you have questions about a club, please reach out to the club facilitator directly. If you have questions about Intramurals, please reach out to either Intramural Coordinator Ms. Amy Francis (francisa@sau25.net) or Miss Jaclyn Parolin (parolinj@sau25.net).

Library News:
Right before the first day of school 10 "Golden Tickets" were placed inside the pages of various books in the McKelvie Library. Click HERE to see one of the signs promoting the McKelvie "Golden Tickets." This is done as a fun way to get the students to browse our book selection and encourage checkout. There have been four students who have checked out or browsed for books containing these "Golden Tickets" during our first 8 days of school. The following students have been awarded a $5.00 gift certificate to Barnes & Noble! Congratulations to Eric and Anabelle who both found "Golden Tickets" on Sept. 4th! Congratulations also to Leeanna and Lilly who both found tickets on Sept. 5th. Keep reading and looking for the "Golden Tickets" when you visit the McKelvie Library. There are 6 more tickets remaining!
Have a great weekend! ~Mrs. Cote
