Dear McKelvie Families ~

I hope that many of you were able to attend Wednesday’s event with Jessica Lahey.  Her presentation was outstanding. If you would like additional information, please click HERE.  It is the hope of the Bedford PTG and BeBOLD that Jessica will return to Bedford in the future.  Below are this week’s notes:

Social Media and Snapchat at McKelvie
This year there have been a number of students using the app Snapchat outside of school, leading to a lot of drama and discipline that carries over into the school day.  In talking with many of your kids, a number of very inappropriate snaps and texts are being shared by large groups of students. In addition to Snapchat there are several other Social Media Apps being used by our students such as Instagram and Facebook.

Things to consider to help our kids:
  • Monitor your child’s device for all social media
  • Limit access to devices-phones/ipods are put away at 8:00pm for the night.
  • Do not let devices stay in your child’s room overnight
  • Talk with our child about the dangers of Social Media

For more information on Social Media click on the article Here by Psychology Today

2018-19 School Calendar
The School Board has approved the 2018-19 School Calendar. Please note that there is a substantial change for 2018-19. The district will shift from tracking days to tracking hours. As a result, the last day of school for 2018-19 will be no later than June 13 and could be as early as June 6. The first five snow days, if needed, will be made up by students at the end of the year. Any snow days beyond five days will not need to be made up by students. This should bring some more predictability to the end of the year for families.

On Wednesday evening this week, the Music Department hosted a Recital Night. Fifteen students took to the stage and shared their musical talents with peers and parents.  It was a small, intimate setting, but the musicianship was outstanding. I am so proud of these students and equally proud of Mrs. Coughlin and Mrs. Wickham for facilitating this opportunity.  Click HERE for a picture of those involved.

In the library, students collaboratively just completed a second 1,000 piece puzzle! Click HERE to see the vintage poster lighthouses puzzle. It is fun to watch the students engage and work as a team to piece the puzzle together. We had Pi day with the 6th grade students this week.  Our Math Excel students taught their peers the concept of Pi.  As is tradition, successful understanding of the concept ended with a piece of their favorite pie.  A BIG thank you to Mr. Donahue for organizing this wonderful activity!

Last Day of School now June 20
The Superintendent announced at Monday's Board Meeting that the last day of school for students is June 20 (as of now). He had a conversation with the NHDOE about the two days we missed school due to the Halloween wind storm this year. Given the circumstances of the storm and our school calendar, we will not have to have students make up those two days at the end of the year.

From the Library
A big thank you to the students, parents/guardians, and staff members who were able to attend the rescheduled McKelvie Meets @ the Movies event. Thank you also to the McKelvie Student Council for helping with the movie promotion. I think all would agree that the Disney production of A Wrinkle in Time was a great modern interpretation of the 1963 Newbury Award winner! There were numerous differences so it was interesting to compare the movie and the book.

Our 6th "Search Slip" raffle was held for the month of February. The "Search Slips" are filled out with the title of the book, the author's last name, and the call number. This is done when students are looking for a book using the online catalog. The student then has an opportunity to write his/her name on the back of the "Search Slip" and enter a monthly raffle! February's raffle winner was from Ms. Francis' homeroom. Neel Majmundar received a $5.00 gift certificate to a local ice cream establishment. Congrats!

Beginning on Monday, April 9th, during National Library Week 2018, students will have the opportunity to vote for their favorite Great Stone Face Nominee. Students statewide, in grades 4-6, have an opportunity to vote. Students are encouraged to read two or more of the 20 nominees before voting. Click HERE to access a Google Slides presentation of the 20 nominees. Students at McKelvie will have access to a Google Form voting ballot to cast their vote. The McKelvie winner will be announced on Monday, April 16th. The statewide winner will be announced during the month of May. Happy reading!
