Dear McKelvie Families ~

We have made it to yet another school vacation.  Despite today’s dreary weather, I hope that each of you has a wonderful April break.  When we return on May 1st, it will be a fast moving train until June 19th.  With that said, I will do my best to keep you in the loop, celebrate your kids, and maintain a fun and safe learning environment.  Below are this week’s notes:

Information

COMMUNITY MEETING with The Principals
Join the PTG and the Principals from all six schools for a community forum on Tuesday, May 9th @ 9:30 at BCTV (10 Meetinghouse Road). Email us with your questions or with topics you’d like to hear about from our principals. Would you like to know about the process for classroom placement? What are competencies? How to use power school or an explanation on the grading system as your child changes schools? Let us know and that’s what we’ll talk about! This is a great opportunity to interact with the principals in a small group setting and get the facts! Email Lisa Nash at lisa@eight-stars.com with your questions and topic suggestions.

Book Drive to Strengthen McKelvie Classroom Libraries
We are working on beefing up our classroom libraries as well as the collection of books in our Reading Lab.  If you are looking to get rid of gently used, age-appropriate, high-interest books, please send them our way!  We will be collecting throughout the month of May.  Please see this flyer for more information, or contact Lee Webb, Reading Specialist, at webbl@sau25.net.  Thank you!

Celebration
April Safe Sitters
McKelvie April Safe Sitter Amanda Ducharme practices her hands only CPR skills on recently donated American Heart Association Mini Annie simulator. Hands on simulation requires only 15 minutes of video and practical application to save a person's life. Contact Mrs. Trudel (trudels@sau25.net) to sign up for the May Safe Sitter session.

McKelvie Student Wins Poster Contest!
Each year the New Hampshire Association of World Language Teachers sponsors a state-wide poster competition to promote the learning of World Languages. The theme was "Communication Is The First Step In Changing The World". This year's state winner is McKelvie 6th grader Chelsea Ongjoco. This is the second time Chelsea has won this contest. Congratulations to Chelsea. Click HERE to see her award winning poster.

The votes are in at McKelvie! 130 students cast their ballots for the annual Great Stone Face Award Vote which takes place during National Library Week. The 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place Great Stone Face results for McKelvie are as follows:

Smarter Balanced State Assessment - Coming in May
We will begin our testing when we return from April vacation.
Week of May 1 - 6th grade testing
Week of May 8 - 5th grade testing
We have 3 requests:
  • Students will need a pair of earbuds Monday – Friday. The teachers will keep them safe.
  • Please make sure your child has a healthy breakfast.
  • A good night’s rest is also helpful.
The assessment is not meant to add anxiety.  Students should simply do their best and know that we are behind them 100%.
