4.7.17

Dear McKelvie Families ~

This week was our annual Scholastic Book Fair, sponsored by the PTG.  I must say that our volunteers did an AMAZING job transforming a dated classroom into a special place for kids, parents and teachers to browse.  A HUGE thank you to Lori Cibotti, Sue Jennato, Regina Dixon, Janine Muir, & Karen Sorvillo!  These ladies are simply amazing. On to this week’s notes:

Information

Q3 Report Cards
Please know that Quarter 3 Report Cards are available via the Parent Portal in PowerSchool.

6th to 7th Grade Registration - ACTION ITEM
All current 6th grade parents need to register their child for 7th grade classes.  The portal will be open until April 14th.  Click HERE for more information.

Ecosmith Recycling
Ready for spring cleaning?  If so, bag up those belts, shoes, & bags!  There are boxes and blue bags located in the lobby of each school.  All proceeds go to Bedford’s Destination Imagination teams going to Globals.  Click HERE for more information.  Questions can be directed to Marie Russell at russellm@bedfordnhk12.net.

Mid-Afternoon at the Movies
McKelvie Student Council would like to invite all students to join us for an after school viewing of the movie Sing on Wednesday, April 19th.  The show will start at 3:30 and run until 5:30 pm.  There is no charge for the movie, but snacks are available for a small fee.  Italian ice, water, and Capri Sun can be ordered ahead, or students may bring a snack to enjoy during the movie.  All proceeds will go to benefit Student Council activities. Click HERE for the permission slip.

Q3 Excessive, Tardy, Dismissal Letters
As you know, each quarter we send out letters to families of students who have in excess of 6 tardies, absences, or dismissals.  We do keep track of illnesses and circumstances that are beyond the control of a family, but do not always know in every case.  Please keep this in mind if you receive one and your family has a special circumstance.

Lizzy and Katy Obukhov Memorial Amphitheater Fundraiser - Friday & Saturday Manchester Community Theatre Players will present the New Hampshire premiere of Yours, Anne a musical work, based on “Diary of a Young Girl” by Anne Frank.  March 31st to April 9th.  Yours, Anne is the first official fundraiser for the Bedford Children’s Foundation, which is raising money to design and build the Lizzy and Katy Obukhov Memorial Amphitheater in Bedford, NH.  Not only is this fundraiser in honor of former RBS student, Katy Obukhov, it also stars another former RBS student, Ella Weintraub.

Smarter Balanced State Assessment - Coming in May
We will begin our testing when we return from April vacation.
Week of May 1 - 6th grade testing
Week of May 8 - 5th grade testing
We have 3 requests:
  • Students will need a pair of earbuds Monday – Friday. The teachers will keep them safe.
  • Please make sure your child has a healthy breakfast.
  • A good night’s rest is also helpful.
The assessment is not meant to add anxiety.  Students should simply do their best and know that we are behind them 100%.

Fidget Toys at School
Fidget toys have always been a tool that teachers use for kids that have a hard time focusing during class.  These types of toys, however, have now come into the mainstream and are popular among our kids.  While we always want kids to have what they need to learn, we also want to make sure these toys are not a distraction to peers.  If your child has one and does not need it (but thinks it’s fun), please help us help them to play with them at a time other than class.  Thank you!

Martial Arts Class
A martial arts class will be taking place in the gym on April 18th after school. This is the second class after a great turnout the first time. Michael Lipari, an instructor from Bedford Martial Arts Academy, is offering a class that will test a new style of learning using animated tutorials to assist in instruction. Students can stay after school with parents' permission to take these classes. They will learn a small number of American Kenpo techniques as well as a basic Kenpo mentality by working with each other and learning from examples given. These lessons are meant for students with no martial arts experience and who did not take the previously offered class. There will be approximately 10 students in the class. Click HERE to register.

Congratulations, also, to Aamit Kancherlapalli whose team Eat Your Greens came in Second in the Vanished challenge.  He and his team will be competing in Global Finals in May.
