9/2/16

Dear McKelvie Families ~

We have successfully completed our first full week of school.  I am so proud of the students as they have transitioned well from summer to the school schedule.  Based on my own family, I also know that a huge factor in this transition is your guidance and encouragement - so thank you!  Below are some updates for you.

NO SCHOOL
Just a reminder that there is no school on Monday, September 5th in observance of Labor Day.

McKelvie Parent Nights
Unlike the elementary schools, our Open House evenings are for parents only.  You will have an opportunity to meet with the teachers, learn about class expectations, and get the real scoop on what is happening at school.  Below is the schedule.
Grade 5 = Tuesday, September 6th @ 6pm*
Grade 6 = Wednesday, September 7th @ 6pm

*World Language and Integrated Arts teachers will be available from 5:30-6:00 on 9/6 for parents who would like to meet them.*

World Language & Integrated Arts
If you are interested in meeting your child's World Language or Integrated Arts teachers, feel free to drop by McKelvie on Tuesday, September 6th from 5:30 - 6:00.  We have made the time convenient for 5th grade families - prior to meeting with the pod teachers.

McKelvie Snack Shop
The McKelvie Snack Shop will open to students during lunches on Tuesday, September 6th.  These snacks are sold for cash only. Questions can be directed to Cyndi Blinn at blinnc@sau25.net.

McKelvie Clubs - ACTION ITEM
McKelvie 16/17 club descriptions will be posted on Friday, September 2nd at 3pm; however registrations will not begin until Tuesday, September 8th, at 8pm.  This will afford families the time to review the club descriptions, as well as equitable access to registrations. NOTE: Because Chorus does not have a size limit, that club is currently available for registrations.  You will be redirected to Mrs. Coughlin's site and can click the registration link.

Q1 Intramurals - ACTION ITEM
September 12 – October 28, 2016
Sign-ups for first quarter intramurals will be held from September 2nd at 4 PM - September 11th at 3 PM.  You will be able to sign up on the McKelvie website under the intramural tab.   Space is limited so be sure to sign up.  Any questions, please contact geddesa@sau25.net.

Library Golden Tickets
Right before the first day of school 10 "Golden Tickets" were placed inside the pages of various books in the McKelvie Library.  This was done as a fun way to get the students to look at books and encourage checkout. There have been three students who have checked out books containing these "Golden Tickets" so far during our 7 days of school. The following students have been awarded a $5.00 gift certificate to Barnes & Noble! Congratulations to Colby Pederson who found the very first "Golden Ticket" on Aug. 26th! Congratulations also to Faye Shaughnessy and Ashlee Gutwillig who both found tickets on Sept. 1st. Keep reading and looking for the "Golden Tickets" when you visit the McKelvie Library. There are 7 more remaining!  ~Mrs. Cote

Chromebooks
Students and teachers are already making use of the technology in their classrooms.  Mrs. Kelly's 5th grade classes created an "About Me" page in Google Slides.  They were able to share with one another through the use of a QR Code.  Click HERE to see their project!

Homework Club
McKelvie offers a homework club for selected students Monday - Thursday from 3:20pm to 4:15pm.  This club is for students who need a quiet work space.  However, the recommended student is expected to be able to work independently.  If you think your child would qualify and benefit from HW Club, please reach out to the homeroom teacher.

Back to school greetings from the PTG!
We are looking forward to another great school year full of fantastic programs and events for our students, staff and families. Donations via check can be made out to Bedford PTG and returned to school with students in the PTG support envelops that have been sent home. With your support we are able to put $70,000/year in programs and events into our schools!! Enjoy the long Labor Day weekend ahead.
