4.17.20 Principal Notes

Dear McKelvie Families~

By now we have all learned that Remote Learning will continue for the remainder of this school year. For our kids, parents, and staff members, this brings the realization that many of the fun activities we have each year will be canceled or modified. While I don't have any of the details worked out, we are already thinking about ways to bring closure to this school year and to bring our kids together again. I will keep you posted as we navigate wrapping up this school year in a meaningful way for our kids.

Staff Slideshow:
Everyone at McKelvie misses our kids and wanted to say hello! Click HERE to see a slideshow from the staff that was emailed to students this morning.  Thank you Mrs. Parsons for making the slideshow!

Grading for McKelvie for Quarter 4 Pass/Fail:
McKelvie students have been doing a wonderful job of accessing school in a Remote Learning environment, and teachers have worked incredibly hard to provide the best learning opportunities possible under these circumstances. That said, it’s impossible to replicate the face to face, teacher led instruction that occurs in a typical classroom setting. As such, in an effort to better report student progress in the 4th quarter, we are adapting the report card to reflect a Remote Learning setting.

Report Card Changes
1.  Students will no longer receive a conduct grade.
2.  Achievement Grades will be P (pass) and F (fail).
      a.  70% or higher = P (pass)
      b.  69% or lower = F (fail)
3.  Effort grades will still be given, as usual, on the Q4 report card.

Assessments will continue to be graded and entered into Powerschool as they always have, with an overall percent grade, to provide students and parents feedback on academic growth. Those grades will continue to be entered on a regular basis. The letter associated with the final Quarter 4 percent will either be a P or a F, on the last report card in June.

Workload Survey:
If you have not already done so, please take a moment to fill out our weekly workload survey so we can continue to make informed decisions regarding instructional practices, during Remote Learning. Please click HERE to complete the survey. The survey will close Monday, April 20th at 9:00am.

Library News:
Congratulations to our second raffle winner drawn during National School Library Month! Grady W. from Mrs. Steere's homeroom, was selected out of the 68 entries submitted. The Great Stone Face title that Grady selected, via the Google Form entry, will be mailed to his home from one of our local indie bookstores, Bookery Manchester. Happy reading, Lilly!

Please click HERE for the third Google Form raffle for a Great Stone Face nominee. These weekly raffles are being held in honor of National School Library Month. Please only submit one entry per week, McKelvie. The third winner will be announced on April 24th via the library blog!

McKelvie, we have a new digital resource to explore! Sora, an OverDrive product, is a digital platform which allows K-12 schools to access audio and eBooks. Our school has recently enrolled in the New Hampshire Schools Shared Digital Collection via the Sora platform. Sora is an OverDrive product that will allow our readers to log in with their school account and access over 1,000 juvenile fiction and non-fiction titles. Click HERE to see a Google Slides presentation with an embedded Screencastify video tutorial with how to log in for the first time.

Many students access Flipster, our digital platform for magazines! We now have an additional title for students to browse! We just obtained a magazine titled The Week Junior. This is a current events title students may want to read and think about. Do not forget, Flipster is an EBSCO resource. The user ID is: mckelvie (all lowercase letters) and the Password is: #03110 (don't forget the # before the 03110). By logging into Flipster, you will have access to eight digital magazine titles.

Please be sure to visit the "Remote Learning" LibGuide curation with additional learning and enrichment ideas. Click HERE to see this LibGuide. This LibGuide is always being updated!

Did you know that there is a reading challenge taking place via the Bedford Public Library? McKelvie, with adult/caregiver permission, this is a challenge you may want to consider participating in! Click HERE for more information about the challenge and using Beanstack to track your reading. Emily Sennott, Head of Children's Services at the Bedford Public Library, is encouraging you to take part in the challenge! The goal is to read 2,020 hours as a community before May 4th! Good luck!

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES:
The PTG has several Board and District level positions open for 2020/21. If you are interested or would like more information on any of the roles below please email BedfordNHPTG@gmail.com

PTG Co-President – This is a shared volunteer role responsible for overseeing the functions of the PTG. The Co-Presidents work closely with other PTG board members and district level coordinators to ensure PTG programs, events and fundraisers are carried out. Co-Presidents also host monthly PTG board meetings, assist with creation of PTG budget, and are the PTG point of contact with the Superintendent. No experience needed, training provided.

District Gift Card Coordinator - Work with the Gift Card coordinators at each school, as well as the VP of Fundraising to coordinate and execute the PTG Gift Card fundraising event. Help secure and collect gift cards from local participating businesses. The Gift Card fundraiser runs mid-October until late December.

McKelvie PTG School Co-Liaison - This role is a great way to get to know administration and staff along with being part of the PTG executive board. The liaison is the main point of contact between McKelvie and the PTG and is responsible for supporting PTG/school events. The Liaison also works closely with the Volunteer Coordinator and Hospitality making the ultimate McKelvie Volunteer Team!
I hope you all have a wonderful weekend!

Jen Asdot
