3.22.19 Principal Notes

Dear McKelvie Families~

Happy Spring! The READ project kicked off on Monday, with everyone in the building reading The Doughnut Fix by Jessie Janowitz, each afternoon. At the conclusion of the READ project, Jessie Janowitz will be coming to McKelvie for an assembly.

Last year's READ author was Jennifer Jacobson. As a school we read her book, Small as an Elephant. She is also the author of a newly published professional text called No More "How Long Does it Have to Be?" Fostering Independent Writers in Grades 3-8. This book was released in the middle of February and has some work from McKelvie students published in it! Click HERE to see a photo of Jennafer Merk, Rose Cariello, Lyla Stein, Sarah Ray, and Talya Baskin, holding their own copies of the book!

In other impressive student news, six students from McKelvie qualified for the New Hampshire Alpine Race Association Championships that were held March 9th & 10th at Wildcat Mountain. Congratulations to Luke Purnell, Caleb Goldstein, Mackenzie Goldstein, Ariana Hughes, Jake Oliviero and Ethan Steichen! Both Ethan and Luke finished in the top 10 which allowed them to represent New Hampshire on the NH state team at the Francis Piche Invitational, where the top athletes from eastern states as far away as Virginia and Pennsylvania train together for three days and then compete in both Giant Slalom and Slalom. Upcoming Events:
March 26th Grade 6-7 Registration Night at Lurgio School from 6-7pm (Parents Only)
April 8th-11th: Scholastic Book Fair

Electronic Device Reminder:
Students at McKelvie can bring electronic devices, but can only use them at the before school program.  Once morning recess begins, phones should be turned off and put in backpacks.  If your child wears a smart watch, notifications should be disabled during the school day.  Click HERE to read an interesting article about a teacher who had students tally the number of notifications they got during one period of class time.  The number of distractions was eye opening!

RAL Information Night:
Just a reminder that Lurgio School will be hosting a registration night on Tuesday, March 26 at 6:00 PM in the Lurgio Dining Hall, for students entering 7th grade in the fall. Click HERE for an informational letter from Ross A. Lurgio School pertaining to registration. This event is for parents. Students will have opportunities later in the year, to meet with Lurgio staff and ask questions.

Box Top Popsicle Party Contest:
The Box Tops for Education has their next semi-annual submission deadline coming up later this spring. Your homeroom may just win a popsicle celebration for submitting the most Box Tops! Check your pantries and kitchen cabinets for any box tops. They do expire and the school gets no credit for those expired box tops. Remember to cut or rip carefully. The four digit code and expiration date must be legible on each box top.

Library News:
Happy first weekend of spring 2019! We have been busy in the library using a product called Animoto to create book trailers with the help of our Digital Learning Specialist, Susan Cavanaugh. We have been using one of our databases, Britannica Image Quest, to locate and save images. The students in the Francis/Parolin pod know how to get the MLA 8 citation and format it properly in a works cited document. Many skills have been gained with the creation of the book trailers!

Click HERE to see an Adobe Spark of our You CAN Do the Rubiks Cube Mosaic progress! The first portion of the raccoon from The Doughnut Fix cover is done. The work will continue over the next few weeks.

Have a wonderful weekend. ~Mrs. Cote
