Dear McKelvie Families~

What a talented group of students we have at McKelvie School! The McKelvie Talent Show was a big hit, and student performers were great. Acts included singing, piano performances, card tricks, unicycle riding, and a contortionist, just to name a few!

In other talented student news, congratulations to 5th grader Advika Govindaraju who competed in the statewide spelling bee against 6th, 7th and 8th graders. Advika placed 10th in the state and we are super proud of her!

Congratulations  also to Yash Veerkar, who after winning our school-wide Geography bee, scored in the top 100 students in the state on a written exam. Yash will be competing in the statewide geography bee at Keene State College on March 29th. Good luck Yash- Mckelvie is behind you!

READ Project Announcement:
The READ (Reading for Enjoyment and Appreciating Differences) Project Committee is so thrilled to inform you of an exciting school wide reading opportunity that will begin soon at McKelvie Intermediate School! This year, the teachers voted and chose the book: The Doughnut Fix by Jessie Janowitz. The Doughnut Fix is a heartwarming book about the challenges of growing up, moving, facing unexpected changes, and exploring the world of entrepreneurship! Please visit Jessie Janowitz’s website to read more about the book here.

The students at Mckelvie will have an opportunity to listen to this book aloud in small groups (between 9-13 students) facilitated by a staff member during their last 30 minutes of the school day. This model provides students with an opportunity to read with new students and teachers they may not have normally interfaced with before! The book read will last approximately three weeks (March 18th- April 5th) and will conclude with grade level assemblies and presentations by the author, Jessie Janowitz on Thursday, April 11th! Her presentation is interactive, engaging and inspiring for our young readers and budding authors! We encourage you to purchase a copy of The Doughnut Fix and follow along and discuss the book with your child. We anticipate the release of the sequel: The Doughnut King in May 2019.
Thank you!
~The READ Project Committee

World Language News:
Every year in March the study of World Languages is recognized in New Hampshire as an important part of our educational system. McKelvie is celebrating this month with decorations, food, and dress. The cafeteria is serving special food twice a week for the month. So far we have had food from France and Mexico. Next week we will be eating foods from Germany and Ireland. We continue with foods from England, India, Italy and China. Students are encouraged to wear the colors of the different country's flags each week. Students will be able to participate in various world language contests throughout the month.

MIS Kitchen News:
The breakfast program will be featuring a delicious and nutritious Tropical Pineapple Smoothie. It’s loaded with fresh pineapple, bananas, coconut milk and a boost of protein with vanilla Greek yogurt. Pineapples are filled with essential nutrients like vitamin C, antioxidant beta carotene, numerous B vitamins, the ant-inflammatory enzyme bromelain, fiber and water. These powerful nutrients boost the bodies immune system, promote healthy teeth and bones, and reduce inflammation. They also improve digestion, hydration and help to maintain a healthy weight. In addition to breakfast combo meals, the kitchen will be offering a homemade Cinnamon Blueberry Coffee Cake. This lovely, healthy treat will keep you feeling full and satisfied with lots of long lasting energy from whole grain complex carbohydrates. Our from scratch baking also helps to limit unhealthy ingredients and removes processed and artificial preservatives. Start the school day off with a bang and don't miss out on these healthy, wholesome NEW breakfast items.

For lunch, the kitchen will be preparing two new authentic cultural meals on Wednesday, March 13th and Friday, March 15th. The country featured on Wednesday will be Germany. A choice of an all natural 100% beef hot dog with a whole grain bun or all natural nitrite-free chicken sausage with sauteed peppers and onions on a whole grain bun will be offered. Sides include a baked soft pretzel, homemade German potato salad, sweet peas and onions and fresh cucumber coins. The country featured on Friday is Ireland. We will be offering a choice of homemade beef stew or shepherds pie, homemade Irish soda bread, roasted brussel sprouts and sweet glazed turnips. Don't miss out and come try some of our authentic culture inspired lunches!

Evening Q&A with Dr. Dawn Huebner:
Join us for a 90-minute Q&A on Wednesday, March 13th at 6:30pm at McKelvie Intermediate School with Dr. Dawn Huebner, nationally recognized Psychologist, Parent Coach and author of award-winning mental health books for kids. Dr. Huebner is best known for her What to Do Guides - including What to Do When You Worry Too Much and Outsmarting Worry - which have sold over 1 million copies. Rather than giving a one-size-fits-all talk, Dr. Huebner will be answering audience questions about how to recognize anxiety in kids, how to respond to it, and how to build skills to better manage it. Questions can be submitted in advance, written on a note card that evening (to maintain anonymity) or asked live. This is not a group therapy session but instead an informative Q&A that will leave you with a clearer understanding of anxiety, what parents do that inadvertently feeds it, and how to help your child get on the path to defeating it.

To submit a question for Dr. Huebner in advance, email Priscilla McGinty, School Counselor at McKelvie Intermediate School at mcgintyp@sau25.net, or your child's School Counselor.
