Dear McKelvie Families ~

I am looking forward to Sunday at 3:05pm - and I know many of our students are too (Patriots vs. Jaguars)! I hope that every family enjoys a terrific weekend together.  This week’s notes are dense, so take your time and check out everything we’ve packed into them.  Happy Friday!

New Last Day of School
As of today, we have a total of five days to make up.  As a result, our new last day of school is Wednesday, June 20th.

Q3 Intramurals
Intramural descriptions for Quarter 3 are posted on the McKelvie website under Intramurals>Q3 Intramural Offerings or by clicking the link below. Signups begin today, January 19th, at 5pm and will remain open until filled or Friday, January 26th, at 3pm, whichever comes first. All intramurals will start during the week of January 29th and run until the week of March 26th.  Click HERE to register.

Important Information to Parents: We offered Soccer and Wrestling during Q1 and Q2; however, the coaches are unavailable to offer these sessions during Q3. Intramural offerings are determined each quarter based on facilitator/coach availability and each has its own maximum number of students. All School Read
We are excited to introduce this year's R.E.A.D. project book pick to our students and parents.  Starting Friday, February 2nd we will be reading the book,  As Small As An Elephant as an entire school.  For a preview of the book, watch the book trailer HERE.

In the book, 11-year-old Jack's life gets turned upside down when his unpredictable mother leaves him on a camping trip and Jack must embark on a journey from Acadia National Park to find his way back home.  Here you will find a list of full text reviews if you'd like to take a look.

Since its inception 4 years ago, the R.E.A.D. project has sought to expose students to Reading for Enjoyment and Accepting Differences.  We look forward to another successful year in this endeavor!  During the R.E.A.D. project, all students will be divided into small groups of 10-12 students and will have the opportunity to have this book read to them by a McKelvie staff member for 30 minutes at the end of the school day.  The R.E.A.D. project runs from 2/5 through 2/12 with a kick-off assembly on 2/2.

After reviewing the information on the R.E.A.D. project or the book Small As An Elephant, should you have any questions or would request that your child not participate in this book reading, please contact McKelvie Guidance Department at 472-3951 ext. 22219.

We are excited to share the R.E.A.D. project with McKelvie students this year and look forward to welcoming the author, Jennifer Richard Jacobson, to our school in March.

From the Library
Last Friday, the Allen, Mail, Waldman Pod came to the library for a book character red carpet event. Mrs. Mail announced, with commentary, each character as they "strutted" the red carpet. This anticipated event was a success! Snacks and drinks were served. The costumed book characters introduced themselves, talked to the hosts, and asked questions after walking the red carpet. The hand shaking and verbal manners were impressive. Books that the students created book talks for were displayed on the library tables. Many students have come to the library to check out the books that their peers book talked. Click on Pic. 1, Pic. 2, Pic. 3 and Pic. 4 to see the transformed library and some of the costumed teachers and students! What a great event to encourage reading!
