Dear McKelvie Families ~

Despite the deluge of rain on Wednesday, we had a full house for our 5th grade Parent Information Night.  I am grateful for the partnership and dedication of so many families.  Your support of our school is one of the great hallmarks of this community - thank you!

On a personal note, I am keeping both Houston and the state of Florida in my thoughts and prayers during these historic hurricanes.  I know there are many of you with connections to one or both.

This week’s note:

Grade 6 Parent Night
The 6th grade teachers will be hosting their Parent Night on Thursday, September 14th from 6pm to 7pm.  Parents will meet in their child’s pod area or at a space communicated to you by your child’s pod.  Keep in mind this evening is for parents, not students.

McKelvie's Volunteer Orientation
Please join us on September 21 at 9:30 AM in the cafeteria. This is a great opportunity for new and returning parents to connect with other parents and learn about the many opportunities to be involved throughout the year. We are expecting Superintendent Chip McGee to drop in. Light refreshments will be served. Younger children are welcome. After the meeting, we will provide a brief tour of the building for anyone interested. Please contact Anne Mikol or Stacy Norris with questions (Mckelvieschool@gmail.com)

Intramural Sports - Quarter 1
Intramurals for quarter 1 are full, so online registration is closed. If you submitted a registration, assume that your child is enrolled unless you hear otherwise from the coordinator.

Clubs
Club descriptions will be posted on the McKelvie website by 5pm on Friday, September 8. Registration will begin for most clubs on Monday, September 11, at 5pm and will remain open until the club is filled. Exceptions are Band, Chorus, Select Chorus and Strings. These clubs are currently accepting registrations. Clubs are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Each club has its own online registration form and maximum number of participants. You will be notified by the club advisor as to the status of your registration.  Please notify the club advisor directly if you have any questions, as each club advisor sets his/her own maximum number of participants and schedule.

Homework Club
Homework Club will begin on September 18th from 3:20 - 4:15.  Homework Club is accessed via teacher recommendation and requires a permission slip. Questions can be directed to your child’s homeroom teacher or Mrs. Rocco at roccom@sau25.net.

From the Library
The McKelvie Library has been a busy location. Students have been coming in, using the online catalog to search for books, and reading! This week we began our library orientation for all of the 5th and 6th grade homerooms. We are exploring a new interface as we search the catalog.

On Thursday afternoon of last week, the first of ten hidden "Golden Tickets" was found! Jack, a 5th grade student in Ms. Francis' homeroom, found the "Golden Ticket" in a biography he checked out. Click HERE to see Jack sitting with the book he checked out and the ticket! Jack received a five dollar gift certificate to Barnes & Noble as a prize. Happy reading, Jack!

Back to school greetings from the PTG
We are looking forward to another great school year full of fantastic programs and events for our students, staff and families. Our support drive is under way and if you’d like to make a donation to the PTG you can do so via PayPal by visiting our website www.bedfordptg.org. Donations via check can be made out to Bedford PTG and returned to school with students in the PTG support envelops that have been sent home. With your support we are able to put over $65,000/year in programs and events into our schools!!
K-8 Volunteer Packets
These should have come home with students. You can also access the forms at www.bedfordptg.org under Helpful Links/Forms. Be sure to fill one out and return to child’s school(s) to be made aware of volunteer opportunities throughout the year.

Meet the Principals Event
You are invited to join the PTG and the Principals from all six schools at our annual "Coffee with the Principals" event on Wednesday, September 27th from 9:30 - 10:30 a.m. at BCTV (10 Meetinghouse Road). This is a great opportunity to hear what each school has in store for the year. There will be a Q & A following the presentation. Light refreshments will be served and your young children are welcome to attend.
