1/6/17

Dear McKelvie Families ~

We have successfully completed the first week of the new year.  Honestly, I am amazed at how focused the students are when I walk through their classrooms.  It is a reminder that our partnership with you is an integral part of what we do.  Thank you for sending us such terrific kids.  Our future is in good hands with the quality of child I see each day. On to this week’s notes...

Missing Sweatshirt
A McKelvie student lost his favorite Boston Bruins sweatshirt.  If your child accidentally brought this home, please return it to school.  Click HERE for a pic of the sweatshirt.

Parent Survey for Smarter Balance
The New Hampshire Department of Education is seeking feedback on the statewide mathematics and English language arts assessment, known as Smarter Balanced.  They want to hear from parents regarding their experiences with Smarter Balanced.  Please take a minute to complete this Parent Survey.
Mental Health: A little knowledge can go a long way
Former NH Supreme Court Justice, John Broderick will be speaking to our Bedford community on the evening of January 19th from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the Lurgio Middle School Library.  We invite you and all those in our community to attend, to listen to his message, and to join in this effort to recognize that mental illness is a disease.   The evening event will be most appropriate for parents.  However, there is also a voluntary student event at the high school at 1:30 PM, and a staff event at 3:30 PM at Peter Woodbury School.

A Note from the Library
Over vacation our 4th "Search Slip" raffle was held for the month of December! The "Search Slips" are filled out with the title of the book, the author's last name, and the call number when they are looking for a book. The student then has an opportunity to write his/her name on the back of the "Search Slip" and enter a monthly raffle! December's raffle winner was from Mrs. Kelly's homeroom. Abihinav Vadali. He received a $5.00 gift certificate to a local ice cream establishment.

Lego Donations Needed
Donations wanted PLEASE. The McKelvie Library is looking for LEGOS (not DUPLO). Any clean, gently used LEGOS would be appreciated. If you can donate, have your student drop them off in the library. These LEGOS will be put to good use. Questions can be directed to Julie Cote @ cotej@sau25.net.

Ski NH Snow Passports
4th and 5th grade students are eligible for a passport booklet containing vouchers for lift tickets and trail passes in New Hampshire.  Click HERE for more information.

New McKelvie Signage
After receiving feedback that finding the Main Entrance can be a challenge, we finally installed a sign at McKelvie!  A BIG thank you to Guidance Secretary, Leanne Gould for acting as “Project Manager” for us.  Click HERE or drive by to check it out! Funds from last year’s school directory were used to help make this happen.

Grade 6 Families - Save the Date!
6th to 7th Registration Information Night: March 21, 6PM in the RAL Media Center
6th to 7th Parent Move Up Night: May 25, 6PM in the RAL Dining Hall

Yearbook - NOTICE
Please be aware that the Yearbook Club will be using photos of all students for our 2016/2017 yearbook.  If you do not want your child's photo in the yearbook, please email one of our advisors, Susan Cavanaugh (cavanaughs@sau25.net) or Deb Kelly (kellyd@sau25.net). Otherwise, every child gets in the yearbook.

Earbud Purchase Option
With the introduction of 1:1 Chromebooks this year, students were asked to bring in a pair of inexpensive headphones/earbuds to leave at school. Because many students have forgotten to bring them in, they will now have an option to purchase a pair of inexpensive earbuds (similar in quality to what you would purchase on a plane) from the library for $1.

Have a great weekend,
