Box Tops:
A message from Amy Gaff, our Box Top Coordinator:  After 20 years, the Box Tops Program is changing to fit today's families. The new and improved Box Tops mobile app uses technology to scan your store receipt, find participating products and instantly add Box Tops to your school's earnings online. For the families that like to give back to the school, it will take a small change of habit. As coordinator, I have personally tried to scan the receipt from the grocery store as soon as I get the groceries unpacked and it seems to be working well.; however, others from across the country have experienced technological challenges and if this happens, please reach out to me. I am here to help McKelvie reach their fundraising goal. I will also collect receipts in the collection box if you choose to submit and I can scan them myself but will need to do so within 14 days of purchase. Remember, still clip any box tops on products and submit to the collection boxes. They are still worth $.10 each. Last year we reached our $1,000 goal and hoping to do that again in 2019-2020. Click HERE for the box top flyer.

Library News:
Hello, McKelvie families! I hope this finds you well. During the summer our school library remained a busy place as I was cataloging books to have ready for the first days of school and hosted 3 Relax & Read Events! Rising 5th -7th graders were able to check out books for the first time during the summer at the McKelvie Intermediate School Library. This was amazing! Book checkouts, frozen treats, and raffles made for many smiles! Thank you to the McKelvie staff who helped to make this possible.

During the summer we also obtained many new fiction, nonfiction, picture books, graphic novels, biographies, and professional books for students and staff. Over 80 of the new acquisitions were processed and students and staff have already been busy browsing, reading, and checking out the new books!

Just before the first day of school, 10 "Golden Tickets" were placed inside the pages of various books in the McKelvie Library. Click HERE to see one of the signs promoting the McKelvie "Golden Tickets." This is done as a fun way to get the students to browse our book selection and encourage checkout. There has been one student who has checked out a book containing one of the "Golden Tickets" during our first week of school. Click HERE to see Emma who has been awarded a $5.00 gift certificate to Barnes & Noble! Congratulations! Keep reading and looking for the "Golden Tickets" when you visit the McKelvie Library. There are 9 tickets remaining!

I look forward to meeting the new readers and researchers here at McKelvie! As for the returning students, it has been wonderful to see some familiar faces. The library and the books have missed you. Welcome back! Click HERE to see the library waiting for readers.

Please click HERE to consider subscribing to my Library News Blog.

Have a nice long weekend. ~Mrs. Cote

8.23.19 Principal Notes

Dear McKelvie Families~

It's almost here!  The first day of school is Tuesday, August 27th!  All teachers will be on the playground for the first day of school, holding signs with their names on them so students can see where to line up.  There will be plenty of staff on hand to make sure kids get to the right place!  We do not have a Meet and Greet at McKelvie School as we cannot accommodate 700 cars and families at one time.  This is why we also have two Open Houses at McKelvie.  This week's notes are a bit lengthy but have a lot of important information about the first day of school.

Important Dates:
8/27/19 First Day of School
9/5/19 School Picture Day
9/11/19 Grade 5 Open House 6-8pm
9/12/19 Grade 6 Open House 6-8pm

AM Arrival Procedures:
All students who are driven to school should be dropped off at the front doors of the building's main entrance at the front of the school.  Students can be dropped off beginning at 8:20 and recess goes until 8:40 when the bell rings to enter the building.  Cars may not enter the bus drop off line and students cannot be dropped off at the playground.  Students who are driven to school walk to the playground from the main entrance.  Students who take the bus will be dropped off next to the playground along the concrete barriers.  I highly encourage all students to take the bus, even on the first day of school.  Students need to be in their homeroom classes by 8:50 or they will be marked tardy.  We give some leeway to this on the first week of school.

PM Dismissal Procedures:
Afternoon announcements begin at 3:15 followed by dismissing parent pick-up students.  All students whose last name begins with the letters A-J are picked up at the main entrance on Liberty Hill Road in front of the school. A-J students exit the cafeteria doors near the flagpole and parents need to pull all the way up to pick up their kids.  This keeps the line moving and helps to prevent the blocking of intersections.  All students whose last name begins with K-Z are picked up at the canopy entrance on County Rd.  Parents need to pull all the way up to prevent blocking intersections and to keep the lines moving.

Students who are parent pick-up, walkers, or bike riders need a note stating how they are getting home.  All students go home on the bus that do not have a note indicating they are going home a different way.  If your child is alway a parent pick-up, send in a note indicating the specific days and we will put their names on the permanent parent pick up list.  If your child is a permanent walker/bike rider, send that note in as well.

At approximately 3:17 we begin dismissing busses.  After ALL busses are dismissed and have left the parking lot, we dismiss walkers and bike riders at approximately 3:25.  Walkers and bike riders are dismissed last as there are far fewer cars and busses on the road.  I highly encourage all students take the bus home, even on the first day of school.  I anticipate students will get home a little late the first day.

Before School Program:
Students who have registered for the Before School Program can be dropped off as early as 7:30 at the main entrance on Liberty Hill Rd.  Parents do not need to walk students in and can just drop them off!  Click HERE to get the registration form for the Before School Program.

Infosnap:
If you have not already done Infosnap, please do so ASAP.  Your child will not be able to use computers in the building if Infosnap is not complete.

Older Notes but Still Important:

Kindness Quotes:
We still have a lot of kids that have not submitted a Kindness Quote to hang on the walls of McKelvie. Please click HERE to submit your quote. It only takes two minutes!

Supply Lists:
Click HERE to find your child's supply list. Supplies can come in with students on the first day of school or split up over the first few days.

Bus Routes:
Bus routes are online and can be found HERE. Scroll down to MCK Afternoon and MCK Morning Bus Routes for stop locations and pick-up times. I highly encourage all students to take the bus to and from school, as drop off and pick up lines are really long.

Have a terrific weekend and I can't wait to see your kids next week!  As always, call or email if you have any questions.

Thank you to all of the McKelvie Summer Book Swap participants! There were numerous students that donated books to the swap and as a result were able to choose 1-2 books. These students are able to get a jump start on summer reading and added books to their summer reading stack! Thank you for all of your support with this 2nd annual event.

Click HERE to link to the McKelvie Library Google Sites portion focusing on summer reading. Information regarding reading opportunities, incentives, and leadership roles can be found via the link above. I would love to see rising 5th through 7th graders during the summer on July 1st, July 16th, and August 13th from 12:00-2:00 at the McKelvie Library. Please be sure to take a look. Remember summer reading is reading for FUN. Enjoy!

I wish you all a safe and happy summer filled with great reads! ~Mrs. Cote
BOX TOP News:
WE DID IT MCKELVIE STUDENTS AND STAFF!!! With everybody’s help we collected a total of 10,271 box tops which is the most our school has ever collected in one school year. I am so proud of everyone who helped meet our goal of 10,000 clipped box tops. With that being said, the box top program is changing. They are going DIGITAL. They will still accept the traditional clipped box tops up to its expiration date so keep clipping over the summer. HERE is a letter from the Box Tops 4 Education Program that helps to explain the new changes. I hope to have all of the details before we go back to school so more information to follow.

RAL Parent Volunteers Needed:
Dear Grade 6 Families, the Bedford PTG is looking for a few great volunteers to fill the following positions for the next school year at Lurgio Middle School: 2 Volunteer Coordinators and PTG Support Coordinator. The current folks who fill these positions will be moving on next year and we would love to have some incoming 7th grade parents join the ranks. If you are interested or would like more information on any of these opportunities, please email Sue Jennato or Amy Dion at BedfordNHPTG@gmail.com or Mandy Underwood at amandaund@gmail.com.

PTG News:
PTG THANK YOU…As we close out another school year, the Bedford PTG would like to extend our appreciation and thanks to all of our volunteers who selflessly give their time, talents and donations to support our events throughout the school year. It is due to our amazing volunteers that we can provide so many enriching programs to Bedford students.

BEDFORD PTG COLOR BLAST FUN RUN/WALK THANK YOU – Color Blast Fun Run was an amazing success and we want to extend a huge thank you to all of the participants as well as the many volunteers who made the event outstanding!

6.2.19 Principal Notes

Dear McKelvie Families~

Happy June!  I hope everyone has enjoyed their weekend and that no one lost power during this evening's storms! Though it's raining now, it looks like perfect weather for both Fifth Grade Field Day as well as the Grade 6 Chuckster's field trips. Please remember to put on bug spray and/or sunscreen at home.

Reminder-The last day of school is Monday, June 10th.  There is a 1:15pm early dismissal and no After School Program.

Student Council News:
Yesterday a group of students from the McKelvie Student Council came to school bright and early to paint terrific sayings and pictures on the wall outside of the cafeteria. They did an amazing job! Click HEREHERE, and HERE to see some pictures.  A special thanks to Kimberlee Reich, Mike Brown, and Carolyn Mail for organizing the event!

Kindness Club:
The Kindness Club was a group of amazing students who worked to spread kindness throughout our building and community this year. Our “grand finale” was accomplished with the help of staff during the workshop day. Kindness Club created kind notes which were placed on every locker in the building. Some of the other accomplishments this year were decorating the sidewalks prior to “Frozen, Jr.” and creating cards to be placed into homeless care packages. Would you like to see more of what the Kindness Club did this year? Follow them on Instagram at kindness_in_5th_and_6th.

Sprinkle kindness this summer!

Library News:

Please help your child(ren) return all McKelvie Library materials by tomorrow, June 3rd. I appreciate your help with this! Thank you in advance.

Grace Larochelle and Carla Ferreira from the Bedford Public Library visited the McKelvie Library to invite students to participate in "The Universe of Stories" Summer Reading Program on Friday! Ask your child about summer reading and leadership opportunities at the Bedford Public Library. Click HERE to see one of the Lunch and Learn sessions with Grace and Carla.

Additional summer reading opportunities will be hosted right here at the McKelvie Intermediate School Library this summer! These "Relax and Read" events will take place on:

The students (grades 4-6) are invited to pop in or stay, check out books, and participate in readers' advisory. If a 6th-grade student checks out books during the summer, there will be a box for McKelvie books at the Ross A. Lurgio Middle School Library when school re-opens for the next school year. The Bedford Public Library will be open as well, but I feel strongly that students should be able to access their school library space during the summer. Students can be dropped off at the center side entrance off of County Road. There will be sawhorses and signs marking the way to the library. Please walk your child in to relax and read!

Click HERE to the link from the McKelvie Library website dedicated to summer reading. At McKelvie, there is not a mandated summer reading list. However, we encourage all students to read what they want and are excited about!

Please consider helping to keep your McKelvie student's home library current by participating in our second annual Summer Reading Book Swap! This will encourage kiddos to keep reading over the summer! This swap will be held Wednesday, June 5th through Friday, June 7th. Students will be able to bring in 1-2 gently used, grade-level appropriate books to swap out for another 1-2 books. This will hopefully generate some additional excitement about reading over the summer months! "A Universe of Stories" is a common theme to those libraries involved in the Collaborative Summer Library Program (CSLP).

5.18.19 Principal Notes

Dear McKelvie Families~

What an amazing few weeks we've had here at McKelvie! The music department put on their spring concert last Friday. Thank you to Becky Coughlin and Christa Wickham for all of their efforts in making our music program so great! The kids sounded wonderful and I am so proud of how hard they have worked all year! Click HERE to see a picture of the chorus.

Yesterday we had Grandparents' Day at McKelvie School. Over 400 grandparents came for breakfast, a tour of the building, and performances by the jazz band, select chorus, and drama club. A HUGE thank you to Alyssa O’Neil & Laurie Wallace, McKelvie's Grandparents Day Coordinators, as well as Cyndi Parker our Food Services Manager and David Orleans our Custodian. Thank you, also, to the families who volunteered to work at Grandparent's Day and/or donated items. Grandparents' Day was a hit and it is because of the terrific community that supported the event.

Upcoming Events:

May 22nd at 6:00 Lurgio Parent Information Night for Incoming 7th Grade Parents at Lurgio School
May 24th-27th No School-Workshop/Memorial Day

Volunteer Appreciation:
The McKelvie Staff would like to thank the many volunteers we have had over the course of this school year. To show our appreciation, we would like you to join us for a Volunteer Breakfast on Thursday, May 30th, at 9:30am. If you have been a volunteer this school year and would like to attend, please click HERE to sign up so we can get a head count. Thank you again for all you do!

Parents of 6th Grade Students:
Welcome to Lurgio! In a few short months your child will be entering 7th grade, and we would like to invite you to an informational evening to introduce you to the Lurgio Middle School. We will be hosting parents at Lurgio on Wednesday, May 22nd at 6:00PM. The evening will begin in our dining hall with staff introductions, a brief presentation about the transition to middle school, and time to take any questions you might have about student life at Lurgio. After the presentation, we will be offering student-led tours of the school so that you can get the lay of the land that your child will be entering next August. We hope that you are able to join us on May 22nd. I look forward to seeing you there.
Sincerely,
Ed Joyce

Box Top Contest:
BOX TOPS WANTED!!! This year McKelvie staff and students have collected a total of 8,704 box tops totaling $870.40 toward the school’s goal of $1,000. With the last homeroom competition coming to an end on May 23rd, please check your pantries for the hiding box tops. They expire so getting them into the homeroom teacher would be spectacular! We only need 1,296 more to make our GOAL. With 29 classrooms, that is only 45 box tops per classroom. I KNOW WE CAN DO IT!!!! LET'S GO MCKELVIE!

Library News:
It was wonderful to see the many Grandparents/Special Friends visiting our school Friday! The library was a busy place as these important people came to see our space and how it is different from the school libraries they attended! Many of the special individuals who visited the McKelvie Library completed a small "classwork" assignment. On a Post-it Note, they wrote their grandchild's name, their name, and a special book they recall reading during 5th or 6th grade. These notes are on display at the library! Click HERE to see an image.

A "Lunch and Learn" session will be held on Friday, May 31, 2019, for all interested 5th & 6th grade students. Grace Larochellle, Head of Children's Services at the Bedford Public Library, will be here to discuss the summer reading program as well as the opportunity to become a Jr. Librarian. She will be conducting 4 sessions during lunch times. A nut safe table will be established for these sessions. Interested students will be allowed to carry their lunch from the cafeteria or bring their lunch to the library to listen and learn!

Have a great weekend and enjoy the warmer temperatures! ~ Mrs. Cote

MIS Kitchen News:
The breakfast program will be featuring a brand NEW item for the next 2 weeks: a frozen fresh fruit and yogurt bark. A delicious and nutritious take on a frozen Popsicle or ice cream, this new breakfast item has a lot of essential nutrients to offer our students' minds and bodies. The bark is filled with protein packed vanilla Greek yogurt, hydrating and fiber-filled berries, and is topped with whole grain crunchy granola. In addition to breakfast combo meals, the kitchen will be offering a homemade apricot oat breakfast bar. This lovely, healthy treat will keep you feeling full and satisfied with lots of long lasting energy from whole grain complex carbohydrates. The beautifully orange colored apricot contains powerful antioxidants, beta carotene, and vitamin C. It is naturally a great source of fiber. An amazing effect of fiber is that it helps the body have a slow, constant release of energy throughout the school day. Start the day off with a bang and don't miss out on these healthy, wholesome NEW breakfast items.

The hot lunch program is featuring an exciting homemade mac ‘n cheese bowl on Wednesday the 22nd. Fill your bowl with comforting and delicious mac ‘n cheese, choose from protein options that include crispy diced ham, seasoned chicken strips, shredded pulled pork or roasted chickpeas. Top with an assortment of vegetables that include sweet green peas, diced tomatoes, steamed broccoli, roasted red peppers and sliced jalapenos. Lunch also includes fruit choices and milk. Come and build your bowl any way you like it!
