11.30.18 Principal Notes

Dear McKelvie Families~

Staff and students are back into the swing of a five day school week!  Hopefully there won't be any snow days between now and the holiday break!  Friday, December 7th at 6:30pm is the McKelvie Holiday Concert.  The band and chorus students have worked really hard and are excited to put on a wonderful show.  Come out and show your support to the McKelvie music program on Friday night!

Lost and Found:
If your child is missing his/her winter hat, gloves, jacket, or any other item of clothing, take a look in the lost and found.  The current lost and found will be donated over the Holiday Break to make room for new lost items to come in 2019.

Community Action Team:
The Toys for Tots toy drive began on November 26th. We will be collecting toys at McKelvie until December 13th. We welcome students to bring in new, unwrapped toys.  Collection boxes are outside the main office. The homeroom that brings in the most toys in their grade will be rewarded with a special PJ Day. Thank you for your toy contributions!

Library News:
Hello from Library Land! It is hard to believe that tomorrow is the first of December!

Congratulations to the 10th Golden Ticket winner! Jayden, a 5th grader, was searching for a quote from a professional soccer player when the 10th and final "Golden Ticket" was located.  Jayden received a $5.00 gift certificate to Barnes & Noble! Click HERE to see all of the Golden Tickets.

On Thursday, we wrapped up our first Before-School Book Club!  It was a real treat to be able to read one of the New Hampshire Great Stone Face Nominees with students who were excited about The Losers Club by Andrew Clements. Stay tuned as Amy Poisson (McKelvie Enrichment Teacher) and I will be offering another club in the spring.

Have a great weekend! ~Mrs. Cote

PTG News:
HANNAFORD HELPS REUSEABLE BAG PROGRAM: Hannaford on Jenkins Road has chosen Bedford PTG to be the beneficiary of the Community Bag program in December. For every green Community reusable bag purchased at Hannaford, on JENKINS ROAD, in December, the PTG will receive a $1.00 donation.

STAND BY ME COMMITTEE: PTG is proud to sponsor Stand By Me , a day-long workshop event for all 7th grade students and their parents to be held May 31st, 2019 at SNHU. The parent committee is instrumental in organizing this program. If you are interested in finding out more about Stand By Me or would like to join the committee, contact Lurgio’s Guidance Secretary, Beth Fitzgerald or simply come to the next meeting on December 13th 9:30am, at Lurgio. Bedford PTG and Ross A. Lurgio Middle School are proud to host Detective Matt Fleming of the Bedford Police Department as he presents about the dangers that teens face on social media. This 1.5 hour presentation is specifically geared towards parents, educators and community leaders who are looking to better understand the technology available to teens today and the ways in which child predators use it to exploit them. Parents who wish to bring their children should use caution as the subject matter is very mature. Click here for more information.

Dear McKelvie Families~

It appears winter has come a little early this year! Please encourage your child to dress appropriately for the weather. We highly encourage kids to wear boots if they are planning to go in the snow. We are unable to provide a change of clothes/socks if kids get wet from playing in the snow without the proper gear.

A reminder to parents about 2-hour delays- the before school program opens at 9:30. We have no before school activities on delay days and the bus comes 2 hours later than the original time.

Community Action Team (CAT) - Toys for Tots Drive:
CAT is kicking off their annual Toys for Tots Drive following Thanksgiving Break. Toys can be dropped off at McKelvie until Friday, December 14th. Students are encouraged to bring in a new, unwrapped toy to donate for the holidays. There will be bins across from the main office where students can drop off their toys. Community Action Team members thank you for your support of the Toys for Tots Drive!

Diabetes Awareness:
Did you know November is Diabetes Awareness Month? In 2015, 30.3 million Americans, or 9.4% of the population, had diabetes and of that number, approximately 1.25 million American children and adults have type 1 diabetes. 1.5 million Americans are diagnosed with diabetes every year. Given the prevalence of diabetes in the United States, having the facts is an important part of detection, treatment, and prevention (type 2). Click HERE for more information about diabetes from the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

Are snacks thrown about in your child's backpack?  Chances are it's because their coat, water bottle, and lunchbox are in the lost and found!  Click HERE to see the 150ish items that have been turned in.  If an item looks familiar, tell your child to go and look in the lost and found, located in the cafeteria.

Kindness Club News:
The Kindness Club is promoting November as gratitude month. Students designed a “complimentree” for people to leave kind notes for people at McKelvie. The notes will be distributed to everyone at the end of the month.

Members also created a poster for students to contribute to as they eat lunch in the cafeteria. McKelvie students have been asked to color a square for what they sometimes forget to be thankful for in their own life.

Kindness club is designed to help spread kindness to everyone within the McKelvie community. Students are welcome to attend and no sign-ups are needed. The Kindness Club will meet on Friday, November 16 until 4:15pm.

Dear McKelvie Families~

Yesterday's Move-A-Thon was a big hit with the kids! They had a blast playing dodgeball, capture the flag, and "moving" at all of of the other fun activities. The Move-A-Thon would not be the success it has always been, without the terrific parents and staff members who put in countless hours. Thank you all, for making this year's Move-A-Thon so wonderful!

There are a lot of updates in this week's notes below.

WITCH WAY FUN RUN EVENT UPDATE EMAIL
It looks like the Wicked Witch of the West is playing a cruel trick on us with the weather for the Lurgio Witch Way Fun Run on Saturday, October 27th. Instead of a tornado, we are getting a Nor'easter. In keeping with our theme of more FUN, we have decided to move our fundraiser indoors, which means we have been able to add more games and activities for the whole family to enjoy.

While we won’t be able to trick or trot down County Road, we will be taking our bibbed participants through the school to visit our Halloween-themed pit stops on a journey that culminates in the gymnasium and dining hall with the fun activities of our Witch Way Family Fun Fest. In addition to the costume contest and raffles prizes, we will also have Halloween-themed crafts, inflatable bounce houses, face painting, pumpkin decorating, and so much more!

Schedule of Events:

9:30-10:30 Registration and bib/t-shirt pickup (Media Center)

9:30-11:00 Halloween-themed Pit Stops Open (Lurgio Hallways)

9:30-12:00 Food, Crafts, Activities and Games (Dining Hall and Gym)

11:00 Costume Contest winners announced (Lurgio Gym)

11:00-12:00 Food, Crafts, Activities and Games in (Dining Hall and Gym)

We want to thank all our sponsors, participants, and volunteers for their flexibility as we adjust for the unpredictable weather this weekend. We look forward to a great community turnout tomorrow for our annual fundraiser!

Principal Notes 10.19.18

Dear McKelvie Families~

The weather has certainly changed over the course of this week!  Please make sure your child dresses for the cooler weather.  I strongly recommend labeling your child's belongings such as jackets, gloves, lunch boxes, etc,.  Our lost and found has tripled in size, so if your child is missing something, encourage them to look for it in the cafe.  Parents can look as well.

The Move-A-Thon is Thursday, October 25th. Fingers crossed for a sunny day!
Next Week is Spirit Week at McKelvie. The schedule is as follows:

Monday - Sports Theme Day: Get in the spirit of moving by wearing your favorite team's colors/jersey.

Tuesday - Wear RED Day: In recognition and celebration of “National Red Ribbon Week” wear RED on Tuesday.

Wednesday - McKelvie Colors Day: We are raising spirit and money for McKelvie, wear BLUE and GOLD if you have McKelvie Pride!

Thursday - Move-A-Thon Day - Wear your NEON YELLOW shirts and get ready to MOVE!

Friday - Rest and Recover: You have all worked hard, wear your comfiest sweats or rock your coolest pajamas.

Move-A-Thon Equipment
The Move-A-Thon is Thursday, October 25th. All students should plan to wear sneakers and comfortable clothes - with their Move-A-Thon shirts - on the day of the Move-A-Thon.

If your child will be using a scooter, ripstick, or skateboard they need to bring in their equipment plus a helmet. If your child will be rollerblading, in addition to their helmet, knee, elbow, and wrist pads are required. A full list of equipment needed for the Move-A-Thon can be found HERE.

If a student is able to fit their Move a Thon equipment in a backpack and/or on their lap in the seat, then they will be allowed to bring it on the bus. However, for equipment that does not fit within this guideline, they will not be able to bring on the bus, this includes scooters and riptsticks.

Non McKelvie Sporting Events:
In speaking with community members as well as the Bedford Police Department, there has been an increasing number of McKelvie students going to High School football games.  Some are going with parents and others are being dropped off.  Please know that there is no staff supervision at these games.  As such, it is important that parents keep an eye on their kids, to ensure they are safely enjoying the game.

Red Ribbon Week:
Next week (October 23rd - 31st) McKelvie school is participating in National Red Ribbon Week. This year’s theme is: “Life Is Your Journey. Travel Drug Free.” At school, students will engage in activities that promote a drug free and healthy lifestyle - wearing RED on Tuesday, signing the Red Ribbon pledge, High Five Friday with help from the Bedford Police Department, and sporting red bracelets. At home, discuss this topic with your child(ren), and set clear rules about not using illegal drugs. Click HERE for information about how to safeguard and dispose of prescription drugs in your home.

Library News:
Wow! The weather has turned. This is a perfect time of year to snuggle up with a great read! The library is bustling with students checking out great reads and using our Destiny interface to create a collection/reading log! This will be a digital record of the books that they have read during this school year. Be sure to ask your student if he/she has a collection created yet.

A BIG thank you to Janine Muir and the VERY supportive PTG! The book fair Scholastic Dollars have been spent and two new modular standing desks as well as 40 print books and several packages of fun bookmarks were purchased! The modular standing desks are a hit! Almost ALL of the books have already been checked out to McKelvie students and the bookmarks are marking spots in great reads. THANK YOU PTG.
Click HERE to check out our Halloween library friends created with the spines of books.
Have a wonderful weekend! ~Mrs. Cote

Community Action Team Upcoming Drive:
As we near the winter season, Community Action Team would like to assist Families in Transition in Manchester with the donation of gently used coats. Donations will be accepted at McKelvie the week of November 5-9. Is your coat from last winter too small? Consider donating your gently used coat to Mckelvie so we can pass it on to children in need. Thank You!

Box Tops:
We have collected to date a total of 1,554 box tops which is $155.40 for McKelvie. We are 15.5% of the way to our goal. Ask your neighbors and friends for their box tops too. Every little bit helps. If you have a minute, try out the Box Top 4 Education App on your phone. A quick photo of your receipt and those “BONUS” box tops are submitted. Just be sure to select McKelvie as your school. KEEP COLLECTING AND SUBMITTING!
