11/4/16

Dear McKelvie Families ~

I am beginning to think that calling this weekly email a “Note” is a little misleading.  I wonder if  “epistle” or “journal” might be more accurate?  I do my best to keep these as on point as possible.  This week’s novel is about average in length.  Enjoy!

NO SCHOOL
Just a reminder that there is no school for students on:
Tuesday, November 8th - Election Day
Friday, November 11th - Veteran’s Day Observance

Penny Wars!
If your child was excited about Penny Wars, click HERE for the final results!

Pancake Breakfast Part II
Congratulations to Mrs. Draper’s class and Mrs. Geddes’ class for getting their winning pancake breakfast this morning!  I’m not sure it fell within the wellness guidelines, but it sure was good!  Click on the teacher’s name for a pic of the students.

Move-a-thon Update: Assembly and Prizes
We are pleased to announce that the Move-A-Thon has met our goal and raised just over $40,000 this year.  Thank you to community sponsors and student fundraising to make this goal possible!  As promised, Mr. Fournier and Mrs. Asdot will be performing a dance number at the Move-A-Thon assembly in recognition of the student's fundraising efforts.

The Move-A-Thon assembly is scheduled for Tuesday, 11/22 at 2:15.  Students will be given their "raffle tickets" the week of 11/14 for a chance to win a prize basket of their choice, winners will be announced at the assembly.  (Students do not need to be present at the assembly in order to win - we will hold their prize basket for them).

Students are given 1 raffle ticket for every $10 raised.  If a student is still collecting money from some final sponsors, please have all monies in by 11/14 in order to receive raffle tickets.

Q1 Report Cards
Quarter 1 Report Cards are now available as a pdf through the Parent Portal.  If you are unable to access yours or require a paper copy, please contact your child’s teacher.

Parent/Teacher Conferences
As you know, we are in the midst of conferences.  Please know that we encourage fall conferences and hope that you will attend.  If the dates and times of offerings do not meet your needs, please reach out directly to the teacher to find a mutually convenient time.

McKelvie Holiday Book Fair
Give the Gift of Reading…stop by the McKelvie Scholastic Holiday Book Fair the week of November 28th, more details to come.

Blood Drive
A blood drive will be held on Election Day, Tuesday, November 8th, at Bedford High School in memory of Hillary Silver, a Bedford mother who passed away from a blood cancer last year. Hillary's two children still attend Bedford schools. Volunteers are needed (BHS students can earn Community Service hours).  For more information, please click on the link: BHS Blood Drive Info.

Reading Trials
For over a decade, Bedford 5th and 6th grade students have been using Reading Street as the primary resource to teach the English Language Arts Curriculum.  Given our focus on Columbia’s Writing Project, we are exploring other programs that might dovetail reading and writing more smoothly.  As a result, your child may experience other Reading Programs under the direction of the classroom teacher.  As always, questions can be directed to your child’s teacher, our Reading Specialist (webbl@sau25.net), or Curriculum Coordinator (hansenc@sau25.net).

Coffee Cart
Thank you to the PTG for hosting a coffee cart on Halloween for the teachers.  Between this and the students wearing their costumes, it was a GREAT day!  A special thank you to the Coffee Cart volunteers: Sue Jennato, Ann Mikol, Stacy Norris, Tara Caparrelli, Sally Kellar & Muge Cakir. Thank you also to those who donated food items!

From the McKelvie Library
The 7th "Golden Ticket" has been located by Sharman Hayward, a 5th grade teacher at McKelvie! She located the 7th "Golden Ticket" in a book she was reading to her class. Her class has generously decided to donate the Barnes & Noble gift card to the Toys for Tots Drive.

We had our second Search Slip Drawing! These slips are filled out when students use the online catalog to search for books. Ella Houghton, in Ms. Parolin's homeroom, had her name drawn. Congratulations to Ella. She received a $5.00 gift certificate for a sweet treat from a local ice cream shop. Enjoy!

Just a friendly reminder to have your child(ren) use a book bag for their library books as they transport them to and from school. A plastic bag (even a recycled grocery bag) helps to protect library books during transport. It helps to keep our library materials in great reading shape.

Make Life Sweeter Candy Drive
With the help of a BHS student, we will be conducting a week-long post-Halloween candy drive. All of the collections will be donated to the New Horizons Soup Kitchen in Manchester.  New Horizons gratefully uses these donations as dessert when they serve the homeless, and they also pass it along as a nighttime treat to those homeless guests staying in the shelter.  The goal of the drive is to make life a little sweeter for those less fortunate.  All donations can be placed in the marked box outside the office, starting the day after Halloween until the end of the school day on Monday, November 7th.

Mathematical Olympiads
Two McKelvie moms are working with the school on a volunteer basis to continue our Mathematical Olympiads Club.  Click here for more information.  To register, click here.

A HUGE thank you to those who attended this event on Tuesday night.  BCTV did tape the event and will add it to their programming soon.  Also, Diane Vaccarello did an outstanding job.  For a quick reference, below are 5 steps parents can do to empower their children to make positive choices:
#1  Manage Your Own Emotions (parents and children, model management)
#2  Decrease Over-Parenting
#3  Allow your Children and Teens to Fail
#4  Encourage Sleep
#5  Make Small, Sustainable Changes
