11.17.19 Principal Notes

Dear McKelvie Families~

I hope everyone enjoyed their weekend! With the really cold weather this past week, I want to remind parents that unless it falls below 20 degrees, kids are going outside for recess. Hats and jackets are highly recommended. If your child has lost their jacket it is likely in lost and found as there are about 100 jackets, sweatshirts, and other clothing items waiting to be found!

Library News:
The library was a bustling place this short week! We had classes in the library taking notes for an upcoming Westward Expansion unit. Chef Cote hosted a book tasting with the fantasy books we have here at the McKelvie Library and two classes were introduced to Flipgrid with Mrs. Cavanaugh in conjunction with Mrs. Opitz and Mrs. Cote. This social learning platform allows students to video record responses. In this case, the two 5th grade classes will be creating video responses to books they have read! Students also came to relax and read, create with origami, work on a puzzle, and begin to work on a second Rubik's Cube Challenge! It is almost turkey time! The mosaic that we are going to currently be working on is that of a turkey. Stay tuned for images.

During the week, the library acquired 62 new books from Follett (an educational product vendor) as well as several books from our generous PTG! All of these books are currently checked out or are available for circulation. These books include fiction, nonfiction, biographies, and professional titles. We also received a generous donation from our PTG Scholastic Book Fair. These titles are also circulating!

Have a wonderful weekend! ~Mrs. Cote

Shopping Coordinator Update:
Congratulations once again to the winning classroom for the hot chocolate party, Mrs. Mail. She also had the most scanned receipts. The school has earned $67.20 in scanned receipts this year. We are still waiting for the clipped box tops to be accepted and posted to our account. We should see that soon.

Please take 47 seconds to watch THIS video I made that will show you how easy it is to scan your receipts. All receipts scanned between 11/1/2019 and the next competition will be counted in the next contest. The next competition may be the classroom with the most scans.

Library News:
Happy weekend, McKelvie!

Please click HERE to see our ongoing Google Slides presentation of images from the library. I will continue to add to this presentation as the year progresses. Some of the images you may have seen in the previous week's note and some are unique to this Slides presentation.

Is there a book in a popular series, a new release or a book on a topic we don't have in the McKelvie Library? If so, please have your child(ren) check the Destiny catalog to be sure we do not have the book they are looking to read! If we do not, have them record a Flipgrid video linked to the library site! This link can be found under the "Resources" tab. This is a moderated Flipgrid link where MIS students can record book suggestions. I will take into consideration the title or topic that they are looking to read about based on professional reviews and content. These videos will help drive purchases and collection development. I am excited to watch the student input I receive. As a librarian I strive to provide students with texts they are excited about reading and engaging with by taking into consideration their voices.

There was another "Golden Ticket" located today! Congratulations to Gavin from Mr. Brown's homeroom who found the 7th "Golden Ticket." Click HERE to see Gavin, his ticket, and his prize. There are only 3 remaining!

Thank you to all of the Veterans for your service and sacrifice! Enjoy the day set aside for you and for all those who have given of themselves. ~Mrs. Cote

Well it is official, our first homeroom collection drive is over and the winner of our competition is Mrs. Mail’s classroom. They will be the lucky recipients of a hot cocoa celebration in November.

One quick reminder as this fundraiser moves toward a more digital platform, download the Box Top App and scan your receipts but make sure you give credit to your homeroom teacher. Please key in the homeroom teacher’s last name in the “credit” field and I will include those in the next round of classroom competitions. Most of our scans didn’t have teacher names.

Congratulations to our 2nd Search Slip winner of the year! Fifth grader, Maria O'Brien, along with MANY others, entered our monthly library raffle by filling out a Search Slip with information regarding the book they are looking for in the McKelvie Library. Each month all of the Search Slips are collected and one winner is drawn from all of the entries for the month. 10.26.19 Principal Notes

Dear McKelvie Families~

What a week! Spirit week was a blast. Kids looked terrific in their red for Red Ribbon Week and sports jerseys for Sports Day, and I think Emoji/Meme Day is my new favorite theme!

The Move-A-Thon was one of the best yet, and for that I'd like to thank the all of the parents and staff members that volunteered for the past several weeks to pull off such an amazing feat. Organizing t-shirt sales, purchasing the raffle baskets, promoting the Move-A-Thon and organizing the day of the event takes hundreds of hours from a ton of volunteers. Thank you all for your tremendous efforts in making this year's Move-A-Thon such a big success!

Important Dates:
October 31st-Spirit Day: Wear a fun, school appropriate costume
November 7-13 Fall Book Fair
November 11th-No School Veteran's Day

Red Ribbon Week:
One of the ways McKelvie students participated in National Red Ribbon Week (October 23rd-31st) was signing the pledge on Officer Nightingale’s office door. By doing so, students pledge to grow up safe, healthy, and drug free by understanding the dangers of drug use and abuse, respecting oneself and being drug free, and spreading the word to family and friends about the importance of being healthy and drug free.

Library News:
Hello McKelvie! Thank you to all of the community members who helped support our Move-A-Thon! This was an amazing event on a perfect fall day. Your support helped to create connections and memories for so many of our students! Click HERE to see the Bedford PTG's Rocky visiting our space! He was "rocking" Move-A-Thon sunglasses in support of our fundraiser.

Many 5th grade classes have been coming to the McKelvie Library to "taste books!" This has been a unique and fun way to expose students (and staff members) to various genres of books! Five minute "bites or samples" of these books at our McKelvie Library Restaurant have enabled students to self-select books they might want to check out and enjoy a whole serving of. Click HERE to see students sampling and even see a staff member enjoying a bite! Books have been flying out of our library as a result of our tastings!

Here in the McKelvie Library we are showing our "Mustang Pride!" We are getting ready to complete a Rubik's Cube mosaic of McKelvie's school mascot! At home, discuss this topic with your child(ren), and set clear rules about not using illegal drugs. Click HERE for information about how to safeguard and dispose of prescription drugs in your home.

10.14.19 Principal Notes

Dear McKelvie Families~

It was a short but busy week at McKelvie School last week, and I anticipate another short but busy week to come!

Important Dates:
October 16th-Picture retake day
October 21st-Sponsorship Form and Money are Due
October 24th-Move-A-Thon
October 31st-Spirit Day: Wear a fun costume

Vaping:
There has been a lot in the news about vaping and how bad it is, particularly for our kids. It's highly addictive, it's hard to detect, and it's causing severe illnesses and death. The most popular vapes for kids are Juuls as they are really easy to hide and look like a flash drive. Now is the time to talk to kids about vaping. Parents have a huge influence on their children at this age, so please talk to them about the dangers of vaping. Click HERE for an article on vaping for parents.

Move-A-Thon:
Our fundraiser is well underway for 2019! This summer/fall we have installed a new sound system in the gym, completed the outdoor pavilion on the playground, and are wrapping up the courtyard renovation next week, all with Move-A-Thon fundraising money! This year's funds will support a new sound system and lighting in the cafe for school functions like movie afternoons, the talent show, and the school play.  Money will also be used to enhance the playground as well as other school wide projects!

Want the night off from cooking? We would love to have you participate in the McKelvie Move-A-Thon Chipotle Fundraiser night on Tuesday, October 22, from 4-8pm. (Bedford location only, no online orders.) Please show THIS flyer (paper or smart phone) or mention McKelvie before you checkout. Thank you!

Middle School Newsletter:
This year we have purchased a middle school monthly newsletter that includes a lot of great tips on getting through the middle school years.  Click HERE for the October edition.

Box Tops Shopping Coordinator Update:
During October we will be having a BoxTop classroom competition. Your homeroom teacher should have their collection envelope. If you need more space turn in your box tops early and put your teacher’s name on your baggie of box tops.

Please download the app and scan your receipts. For classroom competitions, please make sure to use the “credit” option after you scan “take a quick photo within the app”. Key in the teacher’s name and those will be included in the competition. You only need to key it in once and it will be saved for the next scan. See boxtops4education.com for more detail.

Our collection totals to date are $48.90 in scanned earnings and $70.00 in clipped earnings as of 10/10/19.

Library News:
McKelvie Families be sure to click HERE to see the page off of our library website that contains the databases our library subscribes to! Under each of the database buttons, we subscribe to, there is some help text to help guide the patrons to the database that will best suit their needs. All you need to do is "click" on one of the buttons and enter the username and password listed below. We have many informational resources available to our population for reference and fun! Our many databases contain eBooks with "a read to me" option, videos, dictionaries, as well as encyclopedia entries. The databases also contain citations for works cited pages! These will require a username and password when students are off campus (away from McKelvie Intermediate School). Our usernames and passwords are as follows:

Username: mckelvie (all lowercase letters)
Password: 03110

If you would like to access one of our EBSCO products (Flipster Digital Periodicals, Biography Reference Center or NoveList K-8 Plus) there has been an update to the password. There is a # symbol before the Bedford zip code.

Username: mckelvie (all lowercase letters)
Password: #03110

All of the 5th-grade classes have come to the library for a "Good Fit Books Lesson." Be sure to ask your 5th-grade student how books and shoes are related! Please also ask them about the database NoveList K-8 Plus! This digital tool will help them locate read-alikes based on books they have read and listened to and loved!

10.5.19 Principal Notes

Dear McKelvie Families~

The weather has certainly changed to fall this week! I hope everyone is able to find time to relax this weekend.

Important Dates:
October 11th No School-Teacher Workshop Day
October 14th No School-Columbus Day
October 21st  Sponsorship Form and Money are Due
October 24th-Move-A-Thon

Now that we are a month into a new school year, I would love for parents to talk with their kids about Off Limit Words and Phrases as well as Social Media, in order to ensure our kids are making safe and appropriate choices.

Off Limit Words and Gestures:
As our kids get older it's really important to talk to them about things they cannot say or do in school. Kids know they can't say bad words at school but a reminder from parents is always helpful. It's also really important to talk to kids about specific language besides bad words, that they need to stay away from. Phrases like "I'm going to kill you", "Go kill yourself", or variations of either, are never okay and have consequences when said at school. Gestures that imitate shooting a gun or other violent acts are also not allowed at school. It seems like common sense that kids would already know these things are off limits, but 10, 11, and 12 year old kids are impulsive and need specific reminders.

Social Media:
If your child has a phone, i pod, or other electronic device, there is a good chance they are on social media. Technically kids are not supposed to be on most social media apps until 13, such as Tik Tok, Instagram, and Kik. If your child is on social media, it's important to really monitor what they are saying and doing online. Check their devices daily, don't let them keep devices in their rooms at night, and remind them that what they post should be age appropriate (would you be embarrassed to show your grandmother is a good standard). Most McKelvie aged kids are not developmentally ready for the responsibility needed to be on social media. Click HERE for an article that talks about the most popular social media apps used by kids, that include the good and bad components.  We are seeing these apps with McKelvie Kids.

BHS Football Games:
Going to high school football games is a blast! That said, they are not supervised and 5th and 6th grade kids should not be dropped off to watch the game without a parent present. The games are really crowded and there is a lot going on. Thank you for helping keep our kids safe at the games by having eyes on them!

Move-A-Thon Update:

1. Move-A-Thon Shirts: The deadline for ordering a Move-A-Thon shirt was Friday. If you missed that deadline and are in need of being added to the shirt list, please email Danielle Brimblecom at dcbmemvolunteer@gmail.com so you can be added to the order this weekend.

2. Have you set up your student's online fundraising page? Creating an online donation page allows you to easily share your fundraising request with family and friends. Go to this link Fund Hub to easily set up a donation page for your student. All of the proceeds from the Move-A-Thon will stay at our school!

Open Positions:
We are in need of one lunch monitor that can work Monday through Friday from 11:50-1:50. We are also looking for two paraprofessionals to work with terrific kids. If you are interested in being a part of this amazing school community, please click the link HERE to get to the application site.

Community Action Team - NH Tackles Hunger Food Drive - Oct. 7th - 10th

The Bedford High School Football Team is 4 - 0 on their young season, and tackling every opponent in sight. Next Friday, October 11th, the Bulldogs will be tackling two opponents in one night-Londonderry on the field, and Hunger off of the field.

The C.A.T. team is teaming up with Coach Matthews and the Bulldogs to Tackle Hunger in our Bedford Community. Next week, October 7th - 10th, the C.A.T. team will be hosting a Canned Food Drive at McKelvie in support of the Bulldog's cause. With a combined faculty and student body of over 750 people in our building, imagine the impact we can make in our community if everyone brings in 1 or more items! The simple act of donating creates a ripple effect in our community that may never be seen, but will be felt through our acts of kindness.

Donations will be collected outside of the Main Office all week. Cash donations will also be accepted, and can be sent to Mr. Donahue in Room 7 or Mr. Crowell in Room 23.

Thank you in advance for your support in our efforts to Tackle Hunger!

Library News:
Hello McKelvie families! This is a friendly reminder that library materials are checked out for two weeks at a time. Overdue notices are printed each Wednesday as a reminder for students that an item(s) is/are overdue. We are happy to renew an item for a student as long as another student does not have it on hold. The McKelvie LIbrary tries very hard to make sure that we keep popular items circulating! As of late, there have been some "hot" books published that we try to keep circulating so it is important books are returned on time. Students all are able to check their Destiny library accounts to see when books are due and when a hold is ready for them to pick up. I appreciate your support in making sure that books are returned in a timely manner.

Congratulations to our 1st Search Slip winner of the year! 5th grader, Reese Garrett, along with MANY others, entered our monthly library raffle by filling out a Search Slip with information regarding the book they are looking for in the McKelvie Library. Each month all of the Search Slips are collected and one winner is drawn from all of the entries for the month. Click HERE to see Reese and the envelope containing a gift certificate for a sweet treat!

Have a nice October weekend! ~Mrs. Cote
