Dear McKelvie Families ~

This has been a fast-paced and full week at McKelvie.  Monday night was a school board presentation on our Astronaut visit, Tuesday was our “Continuing the Conversation” forum, Wednesday was the Move-a-thon, and Thursday was a pancake breakfast for 50. I think I’m going to sleep in on Saturday!  Below are this week’s updates:

McKelvie Move-a-thon
An ENORMOUS thank you to all of you who helped support our Move-a-thon.  Special thanks go out to our parent committee: Lisa Wolfinger, Liz Purnell , Jennifer Theodore , Jen Spector, Cindy Detscher , Jen Cassidy & Alyssa Zink.  Final numbers will be revealed at the November 22nd assembly along with a surprise by Mrs. Asdot and me!

Make Life Sweeter Candy Drive
With the help of a BHS student, we will be conducting a week-long post-Halloween candy drive. All of the collections will be donated to the New Horizons Soup Kitchen in Manchester.  New Horizons gratefully uses these donations as dessert when they serve the homeless, and they also pass it along as a nighttime treat to those homeless guests staying in the shelter.  The goal of the drive is to make life a little sweeter for those less fortunate.  All donations can be placed in the marked box outside the office, starting the day after Halloween until the end of the school day on Monday, November 7th.

Mathematical Olympiads
Two McKelvie moms are working with the school on a volunteer basis to continue our Mathematical Olympiads Club.  Click here for more information.  To register, click here.

Continuing the Conversation
A HUGE thank you to those who attended this event on Tuesday night.  BCTV did tape the event and will add it to their programming soon.  Also, Diane Vaccarello did an outstanding job.  For a quick reference, below are 5 steps parents can do to empower their children to make positive choices:
#1  Manage Your Own Emotions (parents and children, model management)
#2  Decrease Over-Parenting
#3  Allow your Children and Teens to Fail
#4  Encourage Sleep
#5  Make Small, Sustainable Changes

Community Action Team - Animal Rescue League of New Hampshire
For our first project this year, the Community Action Team (CAT) has decided to host a drive to benefit the Animal Rescue League of New Hampshire in Bedford.  The students are looking for any pet-related donations that will be used to benefit the dogs, cats, and small animals that are being helped by this organization.  A list of needed items can be found here, on their website.  We will be collecting these items between Monday, 10/31 and Friday, 11/4 and there will be a box across from the main office for the collection.  The students thank you in advance for your help!

From the McKelvie Library
Have you ever heard from your child, "Mom and Dad I need help finding information for a project!" If you have ever heard this, be sure to visit the McKelvie Library's Digital Resources page. By navigating to the McKelvie homepage and clicking on the "Library" tab, you will then see a tab titled "Digital Resources." If you scroll down, each of the resources has a link next to the resource image. The Username (ID) and Password for all of these resources will be the same. The Username: mckelvie (not case sensitive) & Password: 03110. We have many relevant, appropriate, and current resources that are available to you remotely. These resources include articles, eBooks, videos, and images. Many of the resources also will "read" to you. This is a great feature for the population of students who are auditory learners. Do not forget to have your child cite his/her sources using the MLA format and as always be sure to check in to see what your child is viewing online!

Many classes have come into the library to discuss "Good Fit" books and to book shop. Be sure to ask your child if his/her class has come to the library to talk about how books and shoes are related. Many of the books on the tables next to the various sized shoes are new acquisitions. It has been a pleasure to help connect students to books! Here is a picture of what classes have found when they walk into the library find a "good fit" book.

Ecosmith Recycle Bins for Destination Imagination
Did you know that every school in the district has an Ecosmith Recycle Bin?  This is a great way to donate/recycle old clothes, while helping raise funds for our teams who advance to Global Finals each year.  You can put any kind of fabrics in these bins, towels and stuffed animals too.  Ripped shirts and pants with holes are fine, as well as well worn shoes.  Bedford DI greatly appreciates your continued participation in this program.
